Joy = it was a bit strange focused a lot on her family and them bringing her down and felt ripped off that there was basically one scene set in the future when she had made it.

Brooklyn = lovely gentle film enjoyed it a lot.

Legend = ok didn't live up to the hype.

Watching Carol later today with some chocci biscuits and a cuppa.

Tangerine - 6/10

Not that great to be honest, just a chaotic day in the lives of two prostitutes. Didn't really go anywhere.

Is that the one that was filmed using iPhones?

Let Me Explain, Dear [1932]. Directors: Gene Gerrard & Frank Miller

5/10

A few location shots of famous London landmarks in the early 30's are the best part of this. Once we get back to Elstree Studios it just becomes a silly farce.

*******
Jobs [2013]. Director: Joshua Michael Stern

5/10

As in Steve Jobs. How many biopics of this guy do we need? This one went direct to video in the UK.

Cromwell (1970)

Richard Harris as a brooding, torn Cromwell and the stellar Alec Guiness as Richard I. Being a period piece it's aged well, and the story has always fascinated me. Needed an extra hour tbh, too much history left out due to time constraints.

Decent film on its own, but a(nother) dreadful 'Terminator' film.

Gladiator - Had only seen this once before, at the cinema. Mostly enjoyed this re-watch. It's well acted imo. Ending is a bit daft. Good film.

'Tis the season to view screeners, tra-la-la-la-laa..

The Cockleshell Heroes

Old school wartime adventure lark, this one of the secret mission/misfit squad variety. Not quite up to the giants of the field (e.g. Where Eagles Dare), but still daftly enjoyable as these things go. 7/10

Highlander

"There can be only one.." If only. Somewhat dated 80s fantasy nonsense with just enough belief in its own absurdity to pull it off. Where does it rank in the fanboy league I wonder? 6/10

most of CAT IN THE HAT - it might have been a massive bomb but it's bonkers, like eating two tons of sweets

most of OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - snoozed off at the end and not because it was boring, not enough interaction between live action and CGI though. i'll watch it again though

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA - perky and sparky, like all of liberache's outfits ..... and pianos ..... and house ..... and everything

Tangled [2010]. Directors: Nathan Greno & Byron Howard

7/10

Fun version of Rapunzel. Grimm it isn't. Disney's 50th animated cinema feature.

*******
Traffic [2000]. Director: Steven Soderbergh

8/10

Effective adaptation of the Channel 4 TV series into an independent American feature. Soderbergh got 2 best director nominations that year (for this and Erin Brockovich). He won for this one (the better film).

Not whole films but strangely I watched the last half hour of both 'The Shawshank Redemption' and 'The Green Mile' tonight which are equally tear jerking and uplifting.

The writer, director and musical composer were in total equilibrium both times. Just beautiful.

Both 9.5/10

Inception - enjoyed this but it was too obvious and we worked out the ending which spoiled it (just a bit) for us. Discovered how much I enjoy Di Caprio (complete surprise. Did NOT like him so much before) so gave Django Unchained a try. 8/10

Django Unchained - thoroughly enjoyed this. Particularly the first half. Dark but fun. Interest waned during the shoot outs toward the end. Found them silly and went on a bit - very Tarantino.

But then I'm really not a fan of Tarantino and all his quirky, kill-y gore stuff although appreciate I may be in the minority who finds it all terribly dull. Didn't spoil the film though. The Dr was brilliant!

So glad Will Smith turned down the role. Don't think I'd have liked him that role whereas Jamie Fox was perfect in it. 9/10

My Neighbour Tortoro - some of these Japanese animated fantasies get such rave reviews I think I should check them out but tbh I think I might be abnormal because so far I've just found them sweet and 'just ok'.

Enjoyable, watchable to the end, but didn't do much for me. Will try Grave of Fireflies next. 6/10

The Apartment (1960) - features on a lot of 'greatest movie' lists and an Academy Award winner, and I enjoy oldies anyway, so thought I'd try it.

Not bad, enjoyable enough, but not wow at all. Lemmon was fantastic and I enjoyed the writing and performances but nothing to write home about. 7/10 mainly because of Lemmon and it had a nice 'feel' as classics tend to.

Lake Mungo (2008) - low budget Australian horror (of sorts) in documentary style. LOVED this. Far from action packed but so well done and performed it felt so 'real' and gently eerie. 9.5/10

Edvard Munch - Peter Watkins 10/10
