Silver Linings Playbook. Enjoyable enough but overlong - 6.25/10.

Dracula: Dead And Loving It - a generous 4/10

Dr No - 6/10. I'm not a Bond fan but this was OK.

Tangled - 6/10. A bland version of Shrek is how I'd sum it up. The first couple of songs are catchy though.

Wreck it Ralph - 7/10
Good film, like the video game characters/references but Venellopes voice gets really annoying after a while, would have been much better if she were voiced by a child actor.

Watchmen

I'll never understand the hate for this, to me it's a masterpiece, almost art in places. It's more cerebral than your average super hero movie and although quite unremittingly bleak it has so many memorable scenes I'll never tire of it

10/10

Birdman (2014) 9/10

Fantastic performance by Michael Keaton as a washed up Hollywood actor validating himself on Broadway

Rosso Mille Miglia (Italy -2015) 4/10

Pointless 'comedy' set within the famous vintage car race in Italy. The classic cars and scenic locations are the only reason to watch this.

Match (2014) 7/10

Patrick Stewart as an ageing famous ballet dancer being confronted by a young couple over his past. Starts well but degrades half-way through after the revelation of the couple's motives.

The Book Thief (2013) 7/10

Enjoyable though thoroughly predictable WW2 drama about a young girl growing up in Germany during the war.

Celebrated the New Year with some New York violence:

Die Hard with a Vengeance [1995]. Director: John McTiernan

7/10

Bombs and debris all over a pre-9/11 New York City. This one benefits from the verbal sparring between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson (the script was originally a Lethal Weapon script) and Jeremy Irons as the cool baddie.

*******
Gangs of New York [2002]. Director: Martin Scorsese

8/10

NYC natives welcome mid-19th century Irish immigrants by forming into gangs to fight them. Some impressive fight scenes and wonderfully constructed (in Rome) sets. Nominated for 10 Oscars and lost the lot (Daniel Day Lewis should have won), Being released in 2002 Scorsese manages to squeeze in a tribute to the WTC at the end.

Hate? I think it's a great film. One I keep re-watching. Only thing I'm not keen on is the Black Freighter stuff, so I always watch the 186 minute version.

Vertigo

It's all a dream once he's in hospital, you know. Now voted the greatest film ever of course. Maybe not from me, but with my academic hat on I can understand why it's considered so. 10/10

Eyes Wide Shut

Which could be Kubrick's take on Vertigo, when you think about it. A dense, troubling piece, that maybe proved a too low-key swansong for some. But it still exerts a hypnotic grip like few others. 10/10

Mosquito Squadron - Enjoyed it. Hadn't seen this since it was on tv in about 1980. Not a very good DVD, though.

The Outcast [1934]. Director: Norman Lee

5/10

Typically frenetic British comedy crime caper starring the then hugely popular Leslie Fuller.

*******
Carrie [1952]. Director: William Wyler

8/10

Not that Carrie, obviously. This is a soap opera about a man trapped in a loveless marriage who runs off with a young, innocent country girl (and $10,000 of stolen money). It all gets melodramatic as they fall on hard times. Laurence Olivier is wonderful in the lead male role.

The Purge Anarchy. 7.5/10

Really enjoyed this - but a little too real for comfort. One gets the feeling that Donald Trump would think this is a good idea to rid his 'Great America' of poor people.

Yes. There are 2 sequels also. Petals On The Wind and If There Be Thorns. They have all been on the Lifetime channel already. I'm sure the sequels will be on Channel 5 in due course.
I watched them all* recently online, simply because I was a huge fan of the books back in the day. They weren't bad adaptations, considering the source material

ETA: *That includes Seeds of Yesterday.
