The Hateful Eight (which I saw yesterday at my local cinema) 7/10.

There were some good bits in it; but it was very gory, a lot of blood and guts and I thought the ending was lacklustre. Would it necessary be a film I would watch again; no, I wouldn't in a hurry.

The Martian

Looks very pretty but it bored me senseless. It's basically Castaway in space. Meh.

5/10

Love and Mercy, 2015. The story of Beach Boy Brian Wilson's descent into mental illness at the height of the group's fame and the baleful influence of Dr Eugene Landy, who took control of Brian's life using mind-games and medication. His eventual return to (relative) good health is uplifting.
Probably of little interest to anyone who missed the Beach Boys golden era of the 60's, but it's a great film and of course the music is great. Two complaints - 1. the story could have been told in a linear manner perfectly well, but for some reason we are forced to see the story through back-and-forward flashes. Completely unnecessary. 2. The dialogue in some scenes is very poorly recorded and almost incomprehensible. Very 'roomy' and indistinct.
Apart from those two quibbles, we enjoyed it very much. 8/10

Rush, a Ron Howard film, 2013. The story of the racing feud between Playboy James Hunt and the methodical Niki Lauda in the glamorous and dangerous 1970's world of formula 1.
I'm not a motor racing fan and every racing film I've seen has left me cold, but this one grabbed me early on and never let go. I'd never heard of either of the stars, but there are a number of 'faces' in smaller parts and the photography is excellent even if some of the CGI is a bit suspect. A thrilling couple of hours. 9/10

You've never heard of Chris Hemsworth? He is in just about every film nowadays.

ET - The Extra Terrestrial.

I was around for the original release of this. and it must be 15 years or more since I last watched it. It's still fantastic, and I still cried at the end.

Lars and the Real Girl 2007 .

Lars, a delusional chap, has found the girl of his dreams, a life-sized doll named Bianca.

What a load of absolute crap.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1948

Classic tale of the elusive search for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains by a trio of ill-matched prospectors .

Absolutely bloody brilliant.

Daddy's Home - 7/10. Very entertaining with some proper laugh out loud moments, Will Ferrell is as funny as ever and Mark Wahlberg more than holds his own. They bounce off each other quite well too, though the ending is a little schmaltzy, but that was to be expected with this type of film.

Woman in Gold not the most exciting film I've watched but it was okay (tbh I wasn't totally focused on it)

What I can say is that Ryan Reynolds was acted off the screen by Dame Helen Mirren and the (I think) always brilliant Daniel Brühl (who was in Rush - someone posted about it further up - great film)

oh and Charles Dance's American accent was odd and really not sure if Max Irons can speak German or sing opera but in this he apparently does?!?!?

One of those so-bad-it's almost fun movies. But only almost.

Charming romantic road movie as a janitor from a mental hospital travels across America with one of the patients.
