The River Wild 3/10

I never thought that a Meryl Streep film would disappoint.

Should have watched Deliverance again, instead.

A couple of John Wayne westerns that I hadn't seen for decades.........

The Undefeated (1969) - Actually better than I remembered it. The usual mass brawl in the middle section, but overall well worth watching.

BIg Jake (1971) - Set in 1909, so the posse uses cars rather than horses. Not a bad film.

Jurassic World on Blu-ray. Pretty good actually, easily better than the other two sequels.

Sanatorium (2013).

Tries very hard to be a Grave Encounters, but ultimately fails.

4/10.

The Hateful Eight 6/10

Not a bad film by any means but would not be in a rush to sit through it again. Not funny enough to be a black comedy. Too flabby to be an incisive whodunnit thriller. Landscapes and interiors are beautifully shot.

If you're looking for a snow-covered trust issue thriller you would be better served by A Simple Plan on iplayer atm.

Greenberg - 5.5/10

Ben Stiller in a serious role as a former band member with mental health issues (seemingly anxiety) who forms an on-off relationship with a woman. Stiller's good but the film as a whole is flat.

The Big Short (2016) - Just saw this, though it doesn't come out in UK cinemas until next week. Based on the Michael Lewis book of the same name, it follows the very few people who sensed the collapse of the US housing market a few years before it happened and decided to bet against it, making millions. Really dense stuff in terms of jargon but Adam Mckay (Step Brothers!) does a herculean job of breaking it down for us. It's surprisingly pognant. The cast are great across the board, Bale deserves his awards nominations though I wished Carell had been nominated too as his character is the heart of the ensemble.

Saw it last night. I was pretty much sure it was going to win the Oscar after 20 minutes but having comic moments might go against in my experience. Bale steals every scene but I'm such a fan of his that I am waybiased. I implore people to see it as I thought it was an awesome idea for a movie and they explain everything so well. Great acting and great script while Selina Gomez was a highlight for me. Carroll was good but Bale is probably the best actor of his generation in my opinion.

10/10

The ending is superb btw!

Christian Bale is always terrific, I'm a big fan of his too and have been for a number of years now. You expect a high level of standard from him anyway whereas Carell is only recently coming into his own as a dramatic actor (was really good in Foxcatcher). It's funny how everytime I felt like I was being overwhelmed with financial jargon, at those exact same moments of exasperation Mckay brought you back down to earth to break it down for you, whether it be through Ryan Gosling breaking the fourth wall or the celebrity cameos breaking the financial instruments for you. It was a relief

I watched The Longest Ride (2015) based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same title. Me and my friend plan to watch Man Of Steel (2013) afterwards

Gone Girl,

I can't give this a fair score as I quite passionately dislike the book, the film is certainly better and I would have enjoyed it much more if I didn't know the end. If I can attempt to be objective, i'd give the movie a 6, it did class up the story, but the dialogue..... they should have completely re-written it, the direct speeches from the book are just bad.

I wake up screaming (1941) 7/10

A waitress attracts the attentions of a trio of well-connected men and soon becomes a New York socialite. When she is murdered all suspicions are on Victor Mature...

Entertaining whodunit, also starring Betty Grable and Carol Landis. The performance of the Chief Detective is wonderful.

It was this years American Hustle for me, its a cornucopia of awfulness, "unfunny" comedy horrendously edited, like a bunch of GSCE film students editing project., a really patronising tone to the whole thing, i know a bit about banking and finance maybe that didnt help. A self indulgent wankfest for all the actors involved. A truely horrible in don't waste your hard earned going to watch this from me. One mans meat!!
