Black Mass (2015) - Story about infamous gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger and his rise to the top of the Irish mob in Boston, USA with the help of a friend in the FBI. Oh and he has a US Senator as a brother. It's all interesting on paper but the film seems incredibly rushed, the story played out over decades. Plus there's a weird thing going on with Johnny Depp as 'Whitey' in that he's trying to give a performance behind heavy makeup but it doesn't quite work. He's miscast but he makes an effort. I wished he wasn't so insistent upon the vampirish makeup which makes Bulger creepy but in not a naturalistic way.

6/10

Legend - the kemps version was far better, they might not have Hardy's acting chops but this felt more like a spoof in places. I really like Hardy as an actor and he is very good in it but the film just feels misjudged. Worth a watch for Hardy's performance(s) but that's it 6/10

I will have a look for the book, will give more of an insight into certain characters motivations.

I recently watched Big Hero 6 - Baymax was hilarious, and I had a wee tear in my eye in the goodbye scene. 8/10

Like The Hateful Eight, the majority of the marks are for cinematography.

Not sure why the BBFC thought this was a 15 as the violence and ongoing trauma was several measures more visceral than the Tarantino movie imo.

After this and The Hateful Eight looking forward to the supposed uplifting mother/son kept in captivity for years on end Room!

Act of violence (1948) 8/10

A war veteran's actions whilst held with his men in a prison camp catch up with him.

Gripping film starring Robert Ryan, Janet Leigh and directed by Fred Zinnemann. I had never heard of this film before, I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this, althought the surroundings I watched it in may have helped - reclining seats and table service.

Last film I watched was 2005 War of the Worlds. I hadn't watched it in years, it was on Netflix and I couldn't sleep. Managed to fall asleep halfway through.

The Godfather, a Novel for Television.

Only part way through it, 7 hours.

Interesting as a companion piece but it just goes to show what a great editor can do. Don't think the two movies would have been as incredible with all these extra scenes.

True Grit (2010) - 8/10

Surprisingly funny. Had me laughing a few times, which I didn't expect. I loved Jeff Bridge and (gags) Matt Damon's performances, but Hailee Steinfeld's performance as the young orphaned Mattie Ross was truly an eye-opener.

Next on the list: Bone Tomahawk (2015).
