A Return To Salem's Lot (1988)

I'm a big fan of the original David Soul/James Mason classic, but never got around to seeing the sequel so finally gave it a go. Wtf did I just watch?

It's just hilariously bad, everything about it is awful. Wooden acting, diabolical script, laughable special effects and as for The Master, he looked like something out of The Muppet Show. One of the worst sequels I've ever seen!

I will have a look for the book, will give more of an insight into certain characters motivations.

I recently watched Big Hero 6 - Baymax was hilarious, and I had a wee tear in my eye in the goodbye scene. 8/10
The book was my introduction to the author, Dennis Lehane, now I'm a fan

Everest (2015) 7/10 - based on a true story from 1996 where it shows the descent can be as deadly as getting to the summit if you run out of time or luck.

Shocked to find afterwards that there have been over 200 deaths since the first person reached the summit, and still in modern times a 1 in 20 chance of dying on what has become such a commercial climb. In the 'death zone' where the air is too thin for normal helicopters, a thing such as numb hands can kill you. I'm no longer moaning about it being below 10 degrees outside.

Pixels (2015) - 6.5/10 - fun movie no brain required, better than I was expecting. Will appeal to those with nostalgia for 80s arcade games (Pac Man, Donkey Kong) or those with a desire to see Tyrion Lanister with a mullet. This is the type of movie CGI was invented for. Watch out for Lady Lisa in her red dress, she might kick you in the face. Best cameo appearance of a red dress since The Matrix.

Creed (2015) - Actually brilliant. I thought the concept was scraping the barrel a bit but the performances and the direction are stellar. I don't think it'll have the staying power of the original Rocky movie and sequels are unlikely but it wears its heart on its sleeve and much like the titular character it treats its legacy with reverence and dignity. 8.5/10

The Big Short (2016) - 8.5/10 saw this at the cinema today, it's brilliant. The explanations of the various financial terms were genius. Funny with some excellent acting, loved it!

The Revenant - I admired Alejandro González Iñárritu's last movie Birdman but I didn't love it. On paper The Revenant is my kind of film, a survival/revenge epic set in the unforgiving snowy wilderness. I was ready to embrace this more than Birdman but I found it, well... labourious and not in a good way. The performances are good, the cinematography outstanding and there are standout action sequences and vistas. Yet half way through I thought it got a bit repetitive with the survival aspect. Nor could I fully understand the deal about Tom Hardy's character. In the end, I was left disappointed. Oh and this dead wife motif in DiCaprio's last handful of movies is getting a bit weird.

Double Indemnity (1944) - I dozed off part way through. I have seen it a few tmes before. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it.

Also recently re-watched Barton Fink and The Man Who Wasn't There. Enjoyed both of those.

The intouchables - 8/10

Good movie but a bit overrated on IMDB it's currently number 39 on the top 250. Fun and touching movie though.

City Lights - Chaplin was a genius

Creed 10/10. Loved every minute of it and it's by far Stallone's best performance. Can't wait until the next one

I'm still slightly traumatised by that scene.

Airport 75 (1975) Oh Lordy, this one makes the 1969 original look like a masterpiece. Yet another cast-of-thousands air disaster movie, this time aboard the Boeing 747 Jumbo. Stars include Charlton Heston, Efram Zimbalist Jr, Roy (the Invaders) Thinnes, Karen Black and the usual handful of fading (and faded) stars of yesteryear. We even get Gloria Swanson playing herself, although she has the good sense to play it tongue in cheek (I think). George Kennedy (hurrah!) reprises his role as the irascible engineer Joe Petroni and once again he can't find a bad word for Boeing aircraft.
An elderly and somewhat tired Dana Andrews doesn't have much to do except have a heart attack and fly his light aircraft into the front of the 747, causing all manner of panic and mayhem. The film is packed with the type of cliche that would later be brilliantly parodied in AIRPLANE!, including the desperately sick child being serenaded by a guitar-strumming nun. Helen Reddy was roped in to play the nun and I'll bet she regretted it.
Dean Martin and Burt Lancaster are nowhere to be seen, probably with good reason. 3/10, purely for playing 'cor, remember him?'

Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Not bad, nicely paced with a great script but it really seemed that Eric and Jerry were the most interesting characters in it despite Ice Cube and Dr Dre having the career success. Loved any scene with Knight in it

Spooks: The Greater Good...difficult to rate this one, yes it is good, but it felt more like it was a TV special, rather than an actual movie.
