Knight of Cups & The Revenant

See threads.

Puppet on a Chain

Hackneyed drug thriller. Some amusement as a 60s curio (the fashions etc), but the blunt point-and-shoot direction never lifts it out of the mire. Voice-over giant Patrick Allen co-stars. 5/10

Far from Heaven (2002) 6/10

Set in 1950s small-town America : A well-to-do and highly - connected family falls apart as the husband reveals he is gay and the wife finds solace with a black man in segregation-era America.

Fair movie with fine cinematography but the story is very predictable and I'm not sure what the hype is all about. Julianne Moore and Randy Quaid star.

Interstellar 9/10

2nd time of watching, improved from 1st viewing. MM and the rest of the cast really gave great performances.

Knight of Cups - Given up trying to wait for a UK cinema release, had to pursue other 'means' to see this (shame, would love to have seen this on the big screen because it looks gorgeous).

Anyway a return to form of from Terrence Malick. I felt his previous film was too scattered for its own good. Whilst he's still in his post Thin Red Line/New World zone which I understand is still enough to put a lot of people off seeing this, there's enough of a distinct thread to follow. It's essentially a modern twist on the prodigal son, about a Hollywood writer who has lost all sense of purpose. A lot of Malick's films up to now have had poetic elements but I see this as his first pure poem and something I found to be hyponotic. A shame it was crippled by early negative reviews because this is much better than To The Wonder.

8/10

Love that film.

Watched Dogma and had a Potterthon after the death of Alan Rickman.

Bent over and shook my tailfeather last night - The Blues Brothers.

The Overnight (2015) 4/10

A young couple newly arrived in town and anxious to meet new friends spend an evening at the house of a friendly local and his wife. Things get stranger and stranger as the evening progresses.

Dark 'comedy' I guess. A character study that rarely rises above frat humour.

BiB, Another vote for 'The Name of the Rose'. Very dark, but had me hooked to the end.

Also love Dogma, Rickman was brilliant as ever, but the film was entertainment throughout.

Mistress America (2015) 3/10

A college student gets mixed up in the madcap life of her step sister.

Dire, plodding comedy. Greta Gerwig simply cannot act despite doing the same film over and over. The Connecticut scene is beyond embarrassing. The only reason to watch this is the 80s music.

5/10

Soppy romantic comedy.

*******
Edison [2005]. Director: David J. Burke

5/10

Police corruption yarn. Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey deserved a better script.

*******
All the Boys love Mandy Lane [2006]. Director: Jonathan Levine

6/10

Slasher movie with arthouse pretensions. The Texas locations help.

Heaven Knows What (2014) 8/10

The life of a heroine addict on the streets of New York.

'Requiem for a dream' (1/10) done properly and realistically. Excellent acting by the lead, Arielle Holmes, on whose book the film is based.
