Magnolia [1999]. Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
9/10 24 hours in the lives of various characters in LA. Fine ensemble cast. Jason Robards, in his final theatrical film, plays a man dying of lung cancer (a sadly convincing performance). Lush score by Jon Brion with songs from Aimee Mann |

Spotlight -well made, well acted, worthy and refreshingly free of oscar baiting dramatics.
Having said that I think I would have preferred to watch a documentary on the subject matter. It was just too uninvolving to hold this viewers attention 7/10 Mea Culpa Maxima - Silence in the House of God is a real eye opener and deals with the Boston Globe investigation amongst many others. It is available to stream from the Archive site. https://archive.org/details/Mea.Maxi...se.of.God.720p One thing I didn't know was that the internal policing organisation of the Catholic church has been running for an impressive 1700 years and was responsible for The Inquisition as well as burying the "recent" abuse! |

The Hasty Heart (1949) today on movies for men
One of my all tIme faves. Not seen it on TV for a long time. Set in a Burma military hospital after the war. Great story and brilliant performances by all the cast especially Ronald Reagan, Richard Todd and Patricia Neal Sad, amusing at times and very uplifting Must check if it is on DVD 9/10 |

Capture the Flag - Saw it yesterday 6/10, apparently I was bored so I fell asleep!
Room - Seen today, 6.5/10, a bit strange really, not what I'd see normally, but it was the only thing on early enough at Cineworld. |

Got around to seeing "In the Heart of the Sea" at the weekend.
I was quite surprised at how "average" it was. Ron Howard has a reputation for making "definitive" movies about any subject he sets his mind to; Films such as A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon and Rush being good examples. ITHOTS starts off interesting enough but it quickly lapses into becoming a generic olde worlde adventure romp without much depth (no pun intended) or substance. |

Last one I (re-)watched was The Beast (1988), which concerns a Russian tank that gets separated from it's unit and is hunted by vengeance seeking Afghan soldiers and villagers. A very good film imo. Must have been about 25 years since I last saw it. |

OH that sounds good I must watch out for this. Is it on Sky yet
Booked Dad's Army for next week earlier, going purely for Catherine Zeta Jones, I'm aware she's 5 years my senior, and married, but oh man, I still would. |

[quote=Ancient IDTV;81409571]Did the 'cold turkey' scenes spoil it for you? I didn't used to like those bits, but I actually find the whole film enjoyable now.
I enjoyed the film but didn't think it was as good as the original. Those kind of scenes i'm fine with. |

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 5.5/10 SPOILERS BELOW
There was not enough focus on the conflict the Benjamin would go through, a scene or two with a Doctor studying him or the press hounding him would be realistic. He seemed to sail through life without people making comments on his condition, most of the characters seemed very accepting. Like two black people from 1920's New Orleans raising a white child, a child which in real life would have been treated like a freak, it made no sense for the old residents to be like 'meh here's a baby with an aged old mans face'. Nobody was bothered. Also I didn't like the main characters too much, Benjamin had an affair with two married women. Tilda Swinton and Daisy both cheated on their husbands. I'm not really sure where the connection was with Daisy and Benjamin -almost like as soon as she became a woman they fell in lust, not love. They seemed to just be interested in sex with each other and nothing else. I was a bit miffed that as soon as he left home he didn't even bother to write to his mother/Queenie, just turns up home one day and on the spot finds out she is dead. And what on earth happened to his sister, did she not bother to contact him about Queenie, after all she did for him. A few more criticisms too, though I will say the cinematography and make up was very good. |

The Prisoners on channel 4 last night. A superb, gripping, disturbing thriller. A must see.
