Youth (2015) 8.5/10
A music composer and a screenwriter look back on their lives and people-watch in a Swiss sanatorium. Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel in a wonderful art-house comedy. Let us hope the score wins an Oscar! |

Sicario 7/10. Would've given it a 6 but like del Toro.

The Prisoners on channel 4 last night. A superb, gripping, disturbing thriller. A must see.

The last movie I watched was Hollywoodland on demand. 6/10
A good film although it seemed a little aimless at times and great performances from Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck. Poor George Reeves

Benedict Cumberbatch gets to try out his American accent and sing a song. 8/10 ******* Ted [2012]. Director: Seth MacFarlane 5/10 A one-gag comedy. |

Nightcrawler
Jake Gyllenhaal decidedly creepy as a psychopath determined to capture the best news stories and sell them on to tv networks. Wasn't a classic by any means and the ending was unsatisfactory but the acting was great 6/10 |

The Lobster - thought I'd give this a look due to it's intriguingly barmy premise, wasn't prepared for how laugh out loud funny it proved to be (There's blood and biscuits everywhere!!). It ran out of steam a little in the final act but definitely one of the best films of last year.. 8/10

Red 2 - Pretty crap. I thought the first one was okay-ish but I was pretty tired watching this one and it did nothing to wake me up.

Mask Maker [2011]. Director: G.E. Furst
5/10 Another spooky house with a masked slasher working his way through the cast. ******* Flubber [1997]. Director: Les Mayfield 5/10 Disney re-make of their hit The Absent-Minded Professor fails to raise more than a titter despite Robin Williams as the prof. ******** War [2007]. Director: Philip G. Atwell 5/10 Jet Li and Jason Statham beat the crap out of each other before we get to the twist ending. |

Battle of the Rock Musicals:
Tommy Dated somewhat, and faintly insubstantial. But there's still something thrilling about the sheer Ken Russell-ness of it. He certainly throws in a shift, and the music throbs accordingly. A marriage made in chaos. 7.5/10 Magical Mystery Tour More curio than actual film, but then it always was. The Fab Four aquit themselves well enough (Ringo wins the honours), but for all its fascination you're always aware it isn't quite clicking. Very dated of course, but the songs still sparkle like nothing else. 6/10 The Wall Flabby, bloated Pink Floyd indulgence. To be fair, Bob Geldof tries hard with the lead, but in all other aspects this is utter junk. Clumsily executed and painfully sixth-form. Leave them kids alone indeed. 3/10 |

Trumbo (2016) 9/10
Bryan Cranston gives a magnificent performance as Dalton Trumbo, the screenwriter blacklisted for communist activities. The bad guy in the movie is John Wayne; following an interview here in the UK on the Michael Parkinson show, I am not surprised. JW had been a hero of mine as I grew up.Seeing that interview, turned me off him, and sickened me. Some great performances from the supporting cast too, especially the Kirk Douglas look-alike, and the aforementioned JW actor! Apparently they got a couple of things wrong in this film, and the estate of the late Edward G Robinson are not happy, but overall, a superb film! |
