I've not been feeling very well so the other day I curled up on the sofa with a duvet and watched films all day. It's been so long since I've done that.

I watched:

What If
Labyrinth
How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days

I always choose something that's easy to watch when I'm ill.

Three Men In A Boat (1956)
David Tomlinson,Jimmy Edwards and Laurence Harvey,
as the characters in Jerome K Jeromes fabulous book.
Which this film, sadly, bears little resemblance to!
Three of the best jokes in the book are used (and actually
mangled to death) otherwise, it is simply a pleasant 50's
film, with not much working for it!
I only watched it after discussing the book with my elder
son. We both love the book, and he has recently watched
the 70's version where Tim Curry,Michael Palin and Stephen
Moore manage to make a lifeless stab at it too. They film the
actual plot (such as it is) but omit all of the funny anecdotes,
which I.M.O are what makes the book great!

Stray Dog (1949)

An early Kurosawa film about a young cop whose gun is stolen. He feels personally responsible as the gun is then used in a series of crimes including murder but with the help of an older cop they set about tracking down the culprit. A film noir with plenty of tension and suspense, all set during a heatwave in Tokyo, it is generally considered to be Kurosawa's first masterpiece.

Don't Look Now

Nic Roeg on spellbinding form in this du Maurier-based supernatural thriller, all subtle menace and enigmas. A film that haunts the senses, chills the spine, then cuts the throat. Brilliant. 9/10

Goodnight Mommy

Artful, teasing, but ultimately rather disappointing horror that's never quite the shocker it promises to be. It does have its moments, but it's let down badly by the twist, which is not only nothing new but also largely the same as the film it's been reminding you of from the start*. Oh well. 5/10

The Greatest Show on Earth [1952]. Director: Cecil B. De Mille

7/10

Often considered the worst film to have won the best picture Oscar but it has its moments, mostly as a record of the great days of the Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey 3-ring travelling circus (many of whose acts are featured). There's a gag appearance by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby as spectators during Dorothy Lamour's featured sequence. James Stewart appears in clown make-up throughout.

********
Endless Love [2014]. Director: Shana Feste

5/10

Remake of the 1981 Brooke Shields highschool romance, for some reason with Brits cast as the leads (Garielle Wilde and Alex Pettyfer).

*******
Apache Territory [1958]. Director: Ray Nazarro

5/10

Cheap B-Western. "You can't see the Apache, you can feel them," says lead Rory Calhoun. That'll save hiring more extras, then.

*******
McCabe & Mrs. Miller [1971]. Director: Robert Altman

7/10

An anti-Western with a gambler and a prostitute having success in a small mining town and fighting off the interests of big business and their hired gunmen. Julie Christie bagged an Oscar nomination as the prostitute but lost out to Jane Fonda in Klute (playing another prostitute!).

Spectre, not sure why it had some poor reviews when it came out because it is great fun. As well as the action packed story the script has some wonderful asides that had me in stitches. I hope Daniel Craig makes the next one.

It's too long and some scenes go on forever. The asides aren't that funny because Daniel Craig doesn't have very good timing or delivery.

Enjoyable. I love time travel in movies and alternate timelines so this was right up my street. Not as good as the superb and aptly named First Class though.

Michael Keaton and Mark Rufalo are amazing in this
grim, true story of the expose of paedophile priests
in Boston.

Goosebumps - Fun movie based on the hugely popular book series by RL Stine. Though as a fan of the books, I don't think we saw the best of the monsters other than Slappy.

Ah so that's why they pay him $28,000,000 a movie ?

A Good Day to Die Hard Strewth, they must be paying Bruce Willis some serious money to keep him turning up for this fag-end tat now.
All-action, no character, incomprehensible dialogue, no heart, no soul. Someone needs to take the writers and directors (and Mr Willis) to a screening of the original and tell them to make notes.
A waste of two hours. 3/10

Harry and Tonto (Art Carney+cat 1974). I'd never even heard of this film until someone mentioned it on TV. It sounded good so the DVD was ordered.
What a little gem of a film. Harry (Carney) and his dear cat Tonto are thrown out of their New York apartment and reluctantly accept a place at his son & daughter in-law's home. But he doesn't like the strained atmosphere and sets out with Tonto to visit other friends and relatives.
This is a very 70's film, from the look of the film to the subjects broached and the language and mores of the time. Carney plays it quiet and knows when to shut up and let the silence speak. It may be a little over-sentimental at times, but I found it very touching and I was blinking a bit by the end.
This release (bought from Amazon) seems to be from or aimed at the Italian market but the original English dialogue is present and correct. There are no extras and the print has not been cleaned up or restored, which is a pity as in some parts it was rather dark and grubby looking. Very enjoyable, great charm. 8/10
