10 Cloverfield Lane - 7/10. Good psycholgical thriller. Seemed quite low budget, but effective. Great performance from John goodman and the rest of the small cast. The movie keps you guessing all the way through, though it felt a little rushed towards the final climax. worh a watch though..
The Boy - 7/10. Pretty decent horror, with a good twist at the end. I was expecting something along the lines of Child's Play but it was so much more than that. The Witch - 3/10. This film didn't seem to know what it wanted to be - perdiod horror, supernatural drama, something else altogether. Ultimately it was very dissapointing as it was a long slice of nothing. |

Top Dog [2014]. Director: Martin Kemp
5/10 Yet another British gangster movie as the leader of a gang of (Spurs supporting) football hooligans gets drawn into a battle with a protection racket gang led by the always wonderful Vincent Regan. |

Deep Rising (1998)
A glorious slice of B movie hokum with Treat Williams, Famke Janssen and Anthony Heald. Interesting that Heald plays exactly the same kind of sleazeball that he made famous as Doctor Chilton in two of the Lecter films! Unnatural monsters from the deep attack a luxury liner that is a floating casino and brothel (by the looks of it) built and owned by Heald. Williams and co arrive in a small boat, during a tropical storm, carrying a dodgy bunch of geezers, who apparently intend to rob the ship and it's wealthy passengers. One of the dodgy geezers is Jason Flemyng to confirm the sleaze factor. Janssen is wonderfully attractive as the feisty professional thief who is steadily fleecing one and all, prior to the arrival of the monsters. A good little no-brain action film, directed by Stephen Somers, so it is exactly what you may expect! I thoroughly enjoyed it last night, as I did when I first saw it about a year after it's initial release! |

High Rise 0/10 Absolute utter crap. Several people, including myself, walked out after the first half hour. 😡

Station West [1948]. Director: Sidney Lanfield
5/10 Film noir set in the old west. Never quite works in either genre. |

Hail, Caesar - 7/10
Interesting and light-hearted, perfect for fans of the setting and era but lightweight in terms of story. A perfectly fine way to spend an hour and a half or so without being too taxing. The dance scene was great. |

No Escape - Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan. Much, much better than I thought it would be. Wilson is light years away from his usual lightweight roles. 8/10

10 Cloverfield Lane
For the most part a tense, very well-handled three-hander with a star turn from Goodman. However, it wants to have its cake and eat it, leading to a clunky, fudged conclusion. A classy motor, sadly pulling a caravan. 6.5/10 Black Mass So-so gangster biopic. Good to see a more earnest turn from Depp, but the prosthetic look is off-putting. Was it really needed? 5.5/10 |

I'm currently halfway through "Southpaw" with Jake Gyllenhaal. The character he plays is incredibly unlikable and i'm finding it a bit of a drag to get through the rest of the film ..

Seen 3 films this year...
Room - 9/10 - Incredibly moving and affecting. Deservedly won many awards. Deadpool - 8.5/10 - Gloriously OTT, funny, full of great quips and action sequences. Jolly good fun. 10 Cloverfield Lane - 7.5/10 - A great performance from John Goodman elevates this to above average. Brilliant tension throughout, marred by a chaotic, ill-fitting conclusion. |

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) - Thought it was alright. Not one I'd watch again, though.
I also gave Analyze This (1999) a try, but I dozed off about halfway through it. |

Horns. Semblance of a good movie but it was let down by a lack of editing and a bizarre ending.

Duel. Still holds up a superb film. I especially like the scene where the victim confronts, who he thinks is the driver of the tanker, in a roadside cafe. The guy has no idea what he's talking about & ends up fighting with him. You sense the guys paranoia. It's a very funny but also very desperate.
