Schindler's List [1993]. Director: Steven Spielberg
9/10 I'm not a huge Spielberg fan but this film is a near masterpiece, with a chilling performance by Ralph Fiennes as the main Nazi. ******* Despair [1978]. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder 7/0 Fassbinder's first film in English, adapted from the novel by Vladimir Nabokov and one of Dirk Bogarde's finest performances. The art deco apartment is beautifully designed. ******* The Last Mitterrand [2005]. Director: Robert Guédiguian 7/10 The last days of a French president (not named in the film though based on a book about François Mitterrand), being interviewed by a young Jewish journalist and dodging questions about his involvement with the collaborationist Vichy regime whilst still coming across as an amiable socialist. |

The Guest (2014) 7/10
A mysterious-looking special forces soldier in the same elite unit as a family's elder son when he was killed in combat turns on up their doorstep and befriends them. Interesting thriller that loses its way a bit towards the end. Yes that's the guy from Downton Abbey ! |

The Last Stand (2013). I've never been much of an Arnie fan, but by God he's good in this. He acts his age and it really suits him. A ruthless drug boss escapes and his route to the Mexican border takes him right through the town where Arnie is living the quiet life of a Sheriff.
It's a nice simple story with a handful of great one-liners and it left us feeling good. Bad guy (cornered and reaching for his gun): 'Who the hell are you?' Arnie (blowing his head off) 'I'm the Sheriff'.

Hotel Monterey (1972)
Hardline art-house movie (60mns, silent, no actors, no plot,no credits, static camera) filming customers in a budget New York hotel. I watched it because this film was apparently a major influence on Kubrick when he made The Shining, and also greatly inspired many of David Lynch's films (especially Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire) - and I can see why that could well be true. |

The Keep - 4/10
The Nazis meet the supernatural. It also stars a young-ish Ian McKellen. |

The Grand Budapest Hotel [2014]. Director: Wes Anderson
7/10 Fabulous looking quirky comedy with a great performance by Ralph Fiennes. It all gets a bit silly by the end. |

Girl House. A decent slasher film. Which is rare these days.
It's got a genuinely scary killer, bags of gore, and T&A. What's not to like? Ticks all boxes, if you're a fan of the genre. 7/10. |

Liar, liar [2007]. Director: Tom Shadyac
5/10 Jim Carrey as a lawyer who can't tell lies for a day. That's supposed to be hilariously funny. ******* Boat Trip [2002]. Director: Mort Nathan 5/10 Two horny guys end up booking a gay cruise by mistake. Roger Moore, plays an old queen almost exactly the way he played Bond. |

Cold in July (2014) 4/10
A family man kills an intruder and gets pursued by the intruder 's father just out of prison ... Preposterous thriller that starts well enough but becomes ever more ridiculous. Knock knock (2015) 3/10 A family man alone at home for the weekend gets seduced by 2 attractive but deranged ladies. I can only assume Keane Reeves needs the money ... |

I think you mean 1997. And I've always found the film funny.
I liked the courtroom scenes but found the family scenes nauseating. |

The Man who fell to Earth (David Bowie, director Nicolas Roeg 1976).
Saw this on its initial release and several times since, last night being the most recent. Still can't decide if it's a clever work of art or complete, rambling nonsense. Good to watch, nice imagery. 7/10 |

Born to Fight [2011]. Director: Anne Wheeler
5/10 Nerdy new kid at school gets bullied, takes up boxing, is mentored by the school janitor (Steve Austin playing an ex-boxer), gains respect and a girlfriend. Predictable all the way. |

The Forest (2016)
Fairly decent horror film, but too complex and disjointed to be anything spectacular. |
