The Big Blockade [1942]. Director: Charles Frend

5/10

Propaganda piece made by Ealing Studios for the Ministry of Economic Warfare. Newsreel footage mixed with various dramatic sequences featuring star names like Will Hay, Michael Redgrave and Michael Rennie. The Germans are portrayed comically rather than sinisterly.

*******
The Four Just Men [1939]. Director: Walter Forde

7/10

Adaptation of an Edgar Wallace novel about a wealthy gang of vigilantes working secretly to save the country from a traitorous politician working for an unnamed foreign power. The 1944 re-issue print now seen has a brief coda with newsreel footage of Churchill and Hitler.

*******
Annie Oakley [1935]. Director: George Stevens

7/10

Biopic of the smalltown girl who became an international shooting star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Barbara Stanwyck plays Annie and there's an amusing supporting role for Chief Thunderbird playing Sitting Bull.

The Good Dinosaur

7/10

A weekend trip to kids cinema club.

Not up with Pixars best. It looks absolutely gorgeous but the plot is quite basic and doesn't have the depth of a Finding Nemo or The Incredibles, it seemed to be aimed at a younger audience.

The kids seemed to enjoy it, although some of the younger ones were a bit upset by the films darker moments.

The Seven-Ups (1973) 7/10

A NY police chief stumbles across a criminal gang kidnapping mafia bosses for ransom.

Roy Scheider in his element here amidst 70s Bronx locations, however the movie becomes slightly predictable towards the end.

Going The Distance - 7/10

Romantic-comedy featuring Drew Barrymore about a long-distance relationship. I had watched it once before and expected to realise its awfulness on 2nd viewing, but it was surprisingly enjoyable

Stuart: A Life Backwards 9/10

What an incredible performance by Tom Hardy as the as the tragic lead in this fantastic film. I'd not seen this on TV or read the book, but I'm so glad I happened to watch this today. Both he and Benedict Cumberbatch give honest, real performances.

It's a heart-breaking, tragic, funny, clever film about a man with the same qualities. Well worth a watch.
