Dirty Grandpa - Outrageous comedy with Zac Effron and Robert De Niro. Felt like I needed a shower afterwards. Though I won't lie, I did laugh a lot

Bridge of Spies (2015)

This Cold War drama features remarkable acting performances, a good and consistent plot and excellent cinematography and period settings. A faultless film and excellent entertainment.

Verdict = 10/10

Sing Street (2016) - director John Carney

Wonderful 80s coming of age film.

Teenagers escaping troubled lives in 80s Dublin form a band.

Great 80s soundtrack.

Funny, sad and very uplifting. Wonderful young actors and I left the cinema with a smile on my face.

Story of G. I. Joe [1945]. Director: William A. Wellman

7/10

Like A Walk in the Sun [1945], an early Hollywood take on the liberation of Italy by the US infantry. Less poetic but with some grim scenes for the battle of Monte Cassino. Robert Mitchum was promoted to star status with this movie (though only nominated for best supporting actor despite having more screen time than lead actor Burgess Meredith).

*******
Coeur Fidele [1923] . Director: Jean Epstein

6/10

French silent classic of two men fighting over a woman. Some splendid location shots of the Marseille seafront and a famous and influential scene set on a merry-go-round.

*******
3:10 to Yuma [2007]. Director: James Mangold

6/10

Remake of the 1957 film. First half is almost scene-for-scene (with a couple of added cusswords), then the movie meanders a bit with some unnecessary additions and a unsatisfactory ending (I've not read Elmore Leonard's short story so don't know which version is more accurate).

The Inbetweeners Movie - I've never understood the deal with wasting so much money to go to these Mediterranean resorts just to get ****faced when you could do that at home. Still, I liked the characters and laughed a lot.

RAN - 'King Lear' as told by Kurosawa . Visually stunning, although a tad disappointed with this new restoration. Still a great movie.
10/10

Victoria - Single shot, 2 hour plus, slow burner German movie. Young girl stumbles into being the driver for a small time heist.
A wonderful technical achievement and a stellar young cast.
7/10

Symptoms - Creepy house, psycho woman shenanigans. 6/10

How dare you! The National Treasure films are brainless fun i can watch with my younger nieces & nephews. It's hard to find movies all ages can watch and that will keep them entertained.

Brothers Grimsby (2016) Tasteless comedy, definitely not for the easily offended or probably even the not normally offended, its a kind of Shameless does James Bond. Absolutely hilarious and embarrassing ( for us the English) in equal measure. Fantastic, a well deserved 7/10 ( would have been 8 but for the James Bond eye vision which was annoying ).

Mannequin (1987), 2/10. Just awful rubbish.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), 7/10. I'd put off watching this because I knew it mostly received terrible reviews. I enjoyed it, though, and will probably give it a re-watch eventually.

Spoiler
she followed the same path on the ship when at various points she could see how it would unfold (badly) for her earlier self and everyone else. Only once did she try to change things but it was at the wrong time.

Dudley does his drunk routine again. John Gielgud livens things up as a ghost/drunken hallucination.

Fact mixed with myth in this Cinerama western.

I like broad family entertainment from time to time. I thought this was too vanilla even for me. I had cravings to watch The Goonies, Stephen Sommer's Mummy films and Ron Howard's Dan Brown adaptations instead (OK the last example isn't really family friendly). It doesn't help that Nicolas Cage (who I find talented in the right role) isn't a likable action hero. Still, I'm seeing the sequel sometime later this week so I hope I like that one more

L'avventura - A beautiful Criterion restoration of Antonioni's 1960 movie. Monica Vitti's undeniable screen presence is stunningly captured with sumptuous cinema photography. On a first viewing it can be hard to follow (character wise) and meandering in places, but I always come away from this movie loving it more.

Double dips are worth every penny when classic movies look this good on blu ray.

Ghosts of the Abyss [2003]. Director: James Cameron

7/10

Documentary about 2 minisubs descending 12,500 feet to view the wreck of the Titanic. Eerie and beautiful.

*******
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly [2007]. Director: Julian Schnabel

8/10

French film with Americans producing and directing from a screenplay by Brit Ronald Harwood. True story of a magazine editor completely paralysed after a stroke and suffering Locked In Syndrome. He was only able to communicate with the outside world by winking his left eye. Letter by letter he managed to write the memoir on which this film is based (he died 12 days after publication). Stirring stuff.

*******
Bad Company [1972]. Director: Robert Benton

7/10

A group of young US civil war draft-dodgers head out west and find the going tough.

*******
Tombstone [1993]. Director: George P. Cosmatos

7/10

Another take on Wyatt Earp (played here by Kurt Russell) and the gunfight at the OK Corral. Some sources claim Russell effectively directed the movie too.
