The Reluctant Dragon - Interesting look behind the process of the early Disney animations.

7/10

Lesson of the Evil - Typically moody Japanese drama about a school with hints of Battle Royale. Turns to full blown slasher mid way through. Not particularly original but it's fine.

7/10

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - Belated sequel to the classic Wall Street. It seems like a cash in on the financial crash of 2008 than Oliver Stone bringing anything new to the table other than the fact that 'greed is now legal'.

6/10

Fifty Shades of Grey - Adaptation of the hit novel. Didn't think I was going to like this but dare I say it, I was engrossed by the Ana/Christian relationship. It's glossily shot and the director does a really good job of what I've heard is adaptating a terribly written novel to the screen (I've never read it). There's one too many beats close to Twilight though, not that it really bothered me beyond just the familiar material since I enjoyed those movies for the most part too

7/10

Promethius - good on special effects but low on emotional content. I only really watched it because Idris Elba was in it. There are only so many films about alien jellyfish like creatures clamping on to people that I can stand - and the whole created by engineers in space theory of humanity didn't really resonate with me. 5/10

'My Son John' (1952) 3/10

The film is so awful it defies description

3 points solely dedicated to Robert Walker as John, who had an entire day on TCM devoted to him 3 weeks ago. He may have been a sociopath and worse but he was an excellent actor, even in this catastrophic film - his last.

Copie Conforme [2010]. Director: Abbas Kiarostami

7/10

Iranian director Kiarostami heads to Tuscany for this enigmatic, dialogue-heavy drama written for Juliette Binoche, who is in nearly every scene switching between French, Italian and English. Co-star William Shimell is an opera singer making his film debut.

*******
Autómata [2014]. Director: Gabe Ibáñez

6/10

Like a Spanish Blade Runner (shot in Bulgaria). Producer Antonio Banderas is the man tracking down the fugitive androids.

*******
Flight of the Intruder [1991]. Director: John Milius

5/10

Another attempt to find an American triumph out of the Vietnam war.

*******
American Pie: The Wedding [2003]. Director: Jesse Dylan

6/10

Here we go again. Same old characters, same smutty gags.

*******
The Warriors [1979]. Director: Walter Hill

6/10

These NY street gangs look like they spend more time in the hairdressers than on the mean streets.

*******
High Noon [1952]. Director: Fred Zinnemann

8/10

Classic psychological western as Gary Cooper's soon-to-be-retiring marshal spends all but the last 10 minutes of the film trying unsuccessfully to round up some deputies to take on the gang of heavies in the climactic shoot-out.

*******
The Departed [2006]. Director: Martin Scorsese

8/10

The plot (taken from a Hong Kong original) is a bit contrived as an undercover cop tries to find out who a gangster's informer is in the force whilst the gangster's informer tries to find out the identity of the police informer. And the informers are bonking the same woman. Jack Nicholson plays the main heavy with Ray Winston as his sidekick. Multiple Oscar winner (including best picture and a first best director award for Scorsese at his 7th nomination).

X-Men First Class - 9/10

I've not really been impressed with the X-Men films before this, and it's taken this long to get round to seeing this it having been recommended by a friend, but I really enjoyed this. Mcavoy and Fassbender were great, and the story engaging. it was interesting seeing the backstory of how they would become the characters in the original films. The soundtrack, and in particular Magneto's theme by Henry Jackman was very memorable.

I will be watching the newer one "Days of Future Past ” (I think that's what it's called)

If memory serves me right this movie's release was held back in the UK due to the Maddie McCann case.

Think that's my last Alex Garland film ever. Always so much promise but all his films are done by half way.

The Brave One - 6/10

Jodie Foster is attacked in New York and becomes a vigilante while tracking down her attackers. She's good in this but I didn't love the ending.

I saw Agent 47 last night. It was pretty crap. It felt like a quickly made low budget movie tbh. I was waiting for it to be over.

The Man From UNCLE for the 5th time.I love it--stunning cast, gorgeous Italy, lots of quips & innuendo & clever direction. Also, the outstanding score by Daniel Pemberton is one of the most enjoyable I've heard in years 9/10

Just watched Side Effects for the first time since it was released.

Still starts as a great film and goes horribly off the rails in the second half.

felt like a movie of the week and the ending was a tad clumsy

MANIAC - 8half/10
throwback to the 80's slasher movies and done rather well, mostly through the eyes of elijah wood, and it feels completly natural too.

and it REALLY gets into his deranged headspace .....

The tragic stories of two children growing up in mediaeval Japan under unfairness and oppression.

Timeless masterpiece. Watch it on YouTube : https://youtu.be/YbBC4wK3YKU
