Jawbreaker.

I fancied watching a cheesy 90s teen flick last night. It's pretty bad, but nostalgia wins me over every time.

Just got back from Independence Day. Total nonsense from start to finish but still reasonably entertaining even if it was over-reliant on SFX (but so are most films these days). I watched the original again a few days ago in preparation and I'm pleased I did otherwise I might have missed a few in-jokes and references.

district 9 7.5/10
inside man 6.5/10 would have scored higher but didn't get the motives of some characters and thought jodie foster's character was pretty meaningless

Fifty Shades of Black - Spoof of Fifty Shades of Grey as well as attempting to provide a comedy spin on pop culture like the old Scary Movie franchise. Even in that vein the laughs are few and far between them and it's just mostly gross out toilet 'humour'.

3/10

Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (2016) - 4/10

I'm fairly convinced that writers Tianxia Bachang, Bobby Roth, Nick Roth and writer-director Lu Chuan were on crack when they made this disjointed Chinese fantasy adventure film.

In the Heat of the Night (1967) - 8/10

I hadn't seen this since my teens. It had me transfixed then. Did it again this time round. Sure, long-time crime fiction readers will easily guess the murderer's identity after maybe half an hour, but Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger's performances make it worth seeing.

After the Storm (2016) - 6/10

This family drama might wow quite a few critics, but it's not one of director Hirokazu Koreeda's best. It's almost a hybrid of his two critically acclaimed films Like Father Like Son and Still Walking.

Great performances, though. Particularly from the grand dame Kirin Kiki, who delivers a few instances of gentle humour as protagonist Ryota's elderly widowed mother.

Capture the Flag (2015) 9/10 animation with some touching moments.

Firewall (2006) 4/10 Disappointing. "I just don't care about you" summed it up.

No Escape (2015) 1/10 First 5 minutes promising then appalling.

Thor: The Dark World

Worth watching for Tom Hiddleston and Antony Hopkins giving Chris Hemsworth some acting lessons, Loki and Odin stole all the scenes, another fun Marvel film though.

7/10.

Far from Home - 6.9/10 Any easy watch and even though I saw the 'twist' from a mile off, it gets extra points for being an acceptable 83 mins long. Fed up with films being overlong for no good reason!

The Martian - By far the most interesting thing about this is that a film so heavy with scientific jargon managed to make over $600 million worldwide. On that level it's to be admired. It's not a great film though and there are plenty of better survival films out there. My main problem was how the Mark Watney was developed. He's on the planet for many, many months so to speak and I imagine any person would almost be driven to the point of insanity. So I didn't find him believable. Worse still is the underused supporting cast. It's a decent watch with solid production values (it's a Ridley Scott film after all). But I think it falls far shot of better recent sci-fi spectacle like Gravity (also a survival film), Interstellar and Scott's own much maligned Prometheus.

6/10

BFG (2016)

5/10

It's an okay film, but lacking in a good story. I think it would have worked better as a cartoon, as opposed to a humans mixed with CGI.

Check out the 1989 cartoon version of The BFG voiced by David Jason.
