On Amazon Prime - Mr Nobody - Jared Leto vehicle from 2009, strange sci fi movie in which he plays the last mortal human in a universe in which everyone else has chosen immortality. It plays with the notion of time as non-linear, and he tells a story of three different versions of his life. so needs a lot of attention paid to it. I enjoyed it, but it was quite confusing.
At the cinema - Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, went without much idea of what it would be like other than what was in the trailers, and it was indeed very funny. My friend and I laughed a lot, but of course it was shallow and crass and all those things you would expect from the director of The Hangover. |

The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond - I really, really struggled to watch this one, it was one of the worst films I've ever seen.
Sunshine - Danny Boyle directed Sci-Fi about a group of astronauts/scientists who have to detonate a bomb into the sun to cure Earth's ice age. I really enjoyed this one, kept me entertained and watching every minute, unlike Teadrop I watched before. I shed a tear at the end, and the track on the closing credits blew me away - Avenue of Hope by I am Kloot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENNFJFtBalI Currently watching Bridge of Spies. Seems good so far. |

Breathless
You think remakes today have a bad time of it? Critics were up in arms about this '83 take on the oh-so-cool Godard classic. Time, however, has revealed it as a fascinating piece in its own right, in particular its stylistic straddle between 70s pessimism and the new, neon-hued dreams of 80s Hollywood. Richard Gere is terrific as the vain, hustling LA low-life, understandably enamoured with a heart-stopping Valerie Kaprisky. Great stuff. 8/10 Eye in the Sky Tense, absorbing, fat-free drone strike thriller. A tad contrived, and it doesn't quite make the best of some of the issues it raises, but it's very well executed and rarely drops a beat. The mainstream needs more like this. 7.5/10 |

Hunger Games Mocking jay pt2
Just went on and on and by the end I couldn't care less. Mostly watched because Jennifer Lawrence can normally do no wrong in my eyes but I didn't like this. 5/10 |

We've just watched The Dressmaker on Sky. I'm not a fan of Kate Winslet but this was quite a good Aussie film. If you liked Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding, then you'll like this.

Take Down with Pheobe Tonkin - needed more money, better actors, more drafts and different director, then it could've been kinds fun. And there really should've been more baddies. Quote:

Imperium -6/10- Daniel Radcliffe wasn't too bad as a skinhead in this and was hoping to see him really lose himself more in that role, unfortunately that didn't happen.

Battle Los Angeles (2011) - One of the 25p Blu-rays I bought some time ago. A modern take on 'The War of the Worlds'. I thought it was quite well made, but I also think it would have been more enjoyable if they'd cut about twenty minutes of cliches from it. I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than the Tom Cruise version of WotW. I MIGHT actually watch it again at some point. 6.5/10

The film is inspired by the real-life incident known as the Battle of Los Angeles, during World War II. On the night of 24-25 February 1942, unidentified aircraft were allegedly spotted in the airspace above Los Angeles. Suspecting it to be the Japanese, a blackout of the city was ordered and over 1,440 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition was fired. Upon finding no evidence of the existence of any enemy aircraft, the incident was declared to be a "false alarm". The event has since been chalked up as a result of "war nerves", likely triggered by a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining anti-aircraft batteries. |

Now You See Me 2 6/10
The same trick doesn't work twice. Lead character is well played, but shoehorning in a new female magician (presumably because the original actress read the script and declined) just doesn't feel credible. The tricks, while fun, also stretch credibility too far given the timescale and difficulty. Then there's' the awful moment when Harry Potter appears, and you understand he's supposed to be the main bad guy. From then on, the movie is doomed. Michael Caine looks embarrassed to be there. |

David Brent: Life on the Road. Pretty much what you would expect. Funny-ish in parts, makes you cringe at others. Not bad, but not great.

Anyway, I thought it was very good. Definitely one that I will eventually re-watch. 8/10

Revenge of the Nerds - 2/10
It was on in the early morning slot on Film 4. Never seen it before. I didn't get it. At all. Described as a 'gross-out comedy'. I guess 1984 standards were very high as I found it extremely tame. I did make a game of trying to pick out the various actors. |
