Better Living Through Chemistry [2014]. Directors: Geoff Moore & David Posamentier

4/10

Feeble comedy

*******
Dirty Harry [1971]. Director: Don Siegel

7/10

Clint begins his career as the politically incorrect cop. Plenty of quotable lines along the way.

The Shallows -6.5/10- The film has some really nice shots & Blake Lively doesn't do too bad in it. The film does have its ups and downs...

The Bad Education Movie (2015)

A truly awful film

0.5/10 (and I'm being generous)

True Romance (1993) - I vaguely remembered seeing this on VHS when it first came out, but I might as well have been watching a new film. I thought it was great, anyway. I'm already looking forward to seeing it again. 9.5/10

Scattered Dreams (1993) - Made for tv set in the fifties film starring Tyne Daly, about a poor middle aged couple who are unjustly sent to prison, and their children taken into care. Well acted, and genuinely harrowing at times. The ending felt a bit rushed, though. One of the many cheapo DVDs (this one was part of a 4 for £1 deal) I've bought on impulse recently. I hope the others turn out to be as good as this. 8/10 EDIT I note that this is only rated 4.9 on the IMDB. Just goes to show how much (or little) those ratings matter.

Steve Jobs - 6/10

I think there's still room for another movie on this guys life, not just focusing on a part of his life but all of it.

Suicide Squad.

It's not got great reviews, plus it's a DC film, so I went with a bit of trepidation, but I thought it was excellent.

Excellent comic book action that doesn't take itself too seriously & with good humour.

It also has a brilliant soundtrack.

It's DC's best film for a long time: it's obvious they've watched Marvel's films & decided to stop taking themselves so seriously.

Cara Delevingne was funny throughout, plus Will Smith was back to his wisecracking best.

Well worth a watch.

White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf [1994]. Director: Ken Olin

Disney sequel.

Days of Heaven [1978]. Director: Terrence Malick

8/10

Poetic love triangle in the west of 1916.

The Truman Show (1998) - Hadn't seen it before. Put off watching it because I was never a fan of Jim Carrey. He was good in this one, though, and I enjoyed the film. 8/10

Meatballs (1979)

Not the funniest 'summer camp' comedy there's been, but still very enjoyable. Good performance by Bill Murray in his debut starring role.

7.5/10

Room 10/10

Rear Window 8/10

Me Before You 7/10 Not a fan of love stories and it was pretty predictable and a bit twee but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Had some charm.

Hugo 8/10 Charming, beautiful scenery and great cast.

Captain America (1st and 2nd ones) the 1st was OK 6/10 but I zoned out during the second....3/10 maybe.

Aw you've put me in the notion of watching that again - I loved it!

I'm funny with Carrey. I either love or hate his films - no in between. Ace Ventura, The Mask bleurgh but I love love loved Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Did you enjoy the TV series?

I watched the series and quite liked it so would have checked the film out at some point.

Yeah, The Mask is one of the films that put me off him back in the day.

Just watched Snakes on a Plane for the first (but not the last!) time. I really enjoyed it. I generally like 'airplane in peril' films, anyway, and there's hardly a dull moment in this. Sure, it's probably ridiculous, but rats to that. 8/10

Cruel Intentions (1999) - 9/10

It was on TV last night and I hadn't seen it in about 10 years? Teen films aren't really my thing but when they're done well they're pretty fun to watch and this film was one of them. It was highly entertaining and made me laugh on several occasions. It also features a great (and quite nostalgic) 90s cast.

Plus Sarah Michelle Gellar is amazing in this.

Tried to watch Kevin Bacon's new horror, The Darkness, but it wasn't great so gave up after half an hour or so. Probably not fair to rate.

I need a good horror. 😒

The Big White (2005) - Slightly Fargo-esque 'quirky' crime comedy starring Robin Williams, which I didn't enjoy much. 5/10
Johnny Clay

Collateral

Foxx/Cruise both on good form in Michael Mann's excellent thriller that plays neatly with the male psyche. The digital shooting of late night LA creates a fittingly dream-like mood. 8/10

Miami Vice

Mann taps his TV roots with big screen reboot. A typically studied but strangely mundane affair that never quite clicks as drama. Surprisingly short on action too. From Heat to lukewarm. 5.5/10

7/10

The movie than didn't make Aileen Quinn a star. My ears can be thankful for that.

*******
Honeymoon [2014]. Director: Leigh Janiak

6/10

Newlyweds move into old country house and have alien encounters. Not sure why we have 2 Brits pretending to be Americans.

Star of Midnight [1935]. Director: Stephen Roberts

Thin Man style comedy thriller pairs William Powell (star of The Thin Man) on loan to RKO to partner Ginger Rogers.

Identity Thief (2013)

7/10 Good comedy with an ending that doesn't involve a typical happily ever after.

The Martian - It was OK but I felt like I'd already seen it as it was similar to other movies with scenes on Mars only without the added element of aliens or some other mystery/horror situation. It pretty much played out as I thought it was going to. 6/10

The Champions
documentary about the dogs rescued from Michael Vicks dog fighting ring. Can't say I enjoyed it as I cried the whole way through!

Ponyo
I love all studio Ghibli and this is one of my favourites.

Calamity Jane
Love anything with Doris Day, sang along at the top of my voice.
