Hard Eight (1996) - Largely style over substance low key film about an elderly professional gambler. Some decent acting, but not one I'd re-watch (I've already sold the DVD, anyway ). 6/10

The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) - A re-watch of one of my favourite films. Excellent performances from Beau and Jeff Bridges, and Michelle Pfeiffer (and she can sing!). A great late night film. 9.5/10

I tried to watch The Relic (1997) on DVD, but I gave up on it about half way through, because the picture was far too dark for me to enjoy the film (or sometimes know what was happening). ?/10

That is probably one of my biggest film and tv pet peeves. Not everyone watches stuff at night or has dark-out curtains. There's no need to have scenes so dark that you literally see nothing.

I tried adjusting the tv's brightness, contrast etc. (which I've never had to try doing in the five years I've used this tv set), but to no avail, and judging from the reviews on Amazon, it appears that a lot of people have had the same problem with this DVD.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - As souless as the previous installments despite the producers insisting this was a reboot of sorts. These types of films shouldn't be nearing the 3 hour mark.

2/10

Guardians of the Galaxy - A reminder of why I've never really liked the space opera genre. At least with Star Wars there is spectacle to make me forget about the nonsensical attempts to craft a mythology of sorts. Plus there's an added level of smugness to Guardians, the film thinks it's that good with its forced humour. I'm surprised it got the praise it did as it's one of Marvel's worst films.

3/10

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - By no means the best of the series but a film I've always had a deep fondness for nevertheless. There's a 'magical' quality to the Columbus films that tends to be missing from some of the sequels so credit where it's due.

8/10

Michael Mann season continues apace:

Heat

Epic crime drama. Not quite perfect, but it does have that fully-realised 'something to behold' quality to it that cinema sees so rarely. A deserved 10/10.

The Last of the Mohicans

Handsome if a little clinical version of the famous tome. Much to admire, but it often seems reticent to be the rip-roarer it perhaps could be. 7/10

Playing it Cool [2014]. Director: Justin Reardon

5/10

A screenwriter who has always failed at romance is hired to write a romantic comedy and fortuitously finds an almost perfect women to fall in love with.

*******
A Million Ways to Die in the West [2014]. Director: Seth MacFarlane

7/10

Scatalogical comedy western, much funnier than Blazing Saddles whilst also having a more authentic classic western feel.

A Passage to India (1984) - First viewing. I'd heard it was a boring film, but I thought it was pretty good. Some nice scenery. I will almost certainly re-watch it at some point. 8/10

The Missing (2003) - First viewing. Kidnap Western with elements of witchcraft, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett. Maybe a bit over long , but definitely worth watching once. 7/10

Morgan - Not bad & with a good twist, although, with hindsight, it was obvious much earlier in the film.

Paul Giamatti was excellent as usual.

Some laughs in it, but a bit too carried away at times.

The Outlaw Josey Wales - Classic Clint Eastwood as a the civil war veteran heading south pursued by his arch enemy. Clint is, well Clint and there's a scene stealing performance from Chief Dan George as Eastwood's travelling companion.

Captain America Civil War: I suppose MCU just grew up 8/10.

Dad's Army - had terrible reviews but I thought I'd give it a chance - but they were right it was awful. Humour in short supply and a terrible script. 2/10 for the sets and that they could be bothered to turn up.

It really is utter bilge. I'm sure I gave it 0/10 on here. It brings home to you just how good the cast of the original series were.

Anyway, I watched Charlotte Gray (2001), a film about a British agent (played well by Cate Blanchett) operating in Vichy France during the second world war. 7/10

I also watched Payback (1999), starring Mel Gibson, which I found entertaining enough, and which has a large dose of black humour. 8/10.
