There were two cowpats this round:

Newcastle 3-3 Man Utd: 17 players gained a +2 for their draw prediction compared to 32 who incurred a -2 having tipped an away win. Nobody went 2-3 or 3-3 to feel the full effect of the CP.

Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal: Again, 25 players gained a +2 having tipped a draw (nobody predicted 3-3), whilst 26 players got hit with a -2 for their away forecast. Worst of all though, Scratchy & Bazza tipped a 2-3 to Arsenal and hence were left cursing Joe Allen as they incurred the worst possible cowpat there is, a stinky -7.

All of which means Thebenster now leads the cowpat table by 4 points - his total of +28 at this stage of the season has been bettered in 5 of the previous seasons, but is the 15th highest positive total pattage after 21 weeks.

Hi Matt - you did get that +2, but you also got a -2 for going for an Arsenal win (Liverpool's equaliser was in the 90th minute). That was why your total for the midweek fixtures was 0.

Some of us can only dream of a 0 pat for the week

A handy score of 11 was enough for Matt to regain the lead by 1 point. However, this is not quite the closest the competition has been after 22 weeks – twice previously the lead has been shared at this stage (Tokyo and Sattrega both had 291 points in 2010-11, whilst charlieparr and yakutz both had 328 points in 2013-14). There have also been two other seasons where the lead at this stage was 3 points or less.

To illustrate how sticky going it’s been, Matt’s leading score of 265 would not have been enough to be in pole in any previous season after 22 weeks. In fact, 265 points would not have even been enough to lead the competition after 18 weeks last season. That’s not to take anything away for Matt though, hope it doesn’t come across that way

There are currently 27 points covering the top 10, making it the 4th closest competition at this stage so far (there were only 15 points separating 1st and 10th in 2011-12)

Only twice previously has the eventual winner not been in the top 3 at this stage of the season – Sattrega was 7th in 2011-12 and Tokyo was 11th in 2008-09. However, charlieparr is the only player to have led after 22 weeks and gone on to win the title (in both seasons that he managed to take the honours). Tokyo’s comeback in 2008-09 is also the most ground made up on the leader in the final 16 weeks of the season, as he was 33 points behind yakutz at that point.

Some rather modest scoring again perhaps most notable for a Man Utd victory proving the lowest scoring of the ten matches – a rarity if not unique occurrence.

Man City’s home ‘banker’ dominated the stats – most correct picks and points; whilst the 8 maxes at Swansea last night was the highest number of five point maxes.

Incidentally, this is the first time in 4 seasons (and only the 5th time barring the first season of the competition) that we have had two weeks in a row without a single match generating at least 10 exacts.

Despite dropping down a few places in the main table, Terrence Chant takes over as the man in form. I say that loosely though as his 83 points equals the lowest total achieved by the form guide leader this season (TruffleShuffle also had 83 points in week 15).

There was just the one cowpat this week, Chelsea’s disputed last gasp equaliser making it 3-3 in their game at home to Everton.

Nobody went 3-3 but 24 players did go for a different draw to pick up a +2 cowpat, whereas three players incurred a -2 via predicting an away win different to 2-3. The biggest sickener of all of course was for dosanjh1 & UR Correct who did tip a 3-2 away win, and saw their hopes raised and dashed in matter of minutes, ultimately collecting a most undeserved -7 cowpat.

Nobody at the top of the table was affected by such shenanigans however, meaning the Benster still leads Matt by +4.

The only closer seasons at this stage have been 2008-09 - when yakutz (295 points), bradleyspencer1 (294) and cheeks (293 points) were separated by 2 points - and 2011-12 – when Sattrega (306), Big Dipper (305) and Hullboy (304) were also separated by 2 points.

There were two CP’s this week, Norwich 4-5 Liverpool & Palace 1-3 Tottenham.

Biggest winners were Real Ale and tso, whobagged the uber at Selhurst and a +2 at Norwich to total a +7 pat for the round.

The unluckiest player were Ricky, Anap and Chris Mac who all lost the max at Palace with a 1-2 pick and went for a draw at Carrow Road, resulting in a -5 CP.

At the top, the benster maintains his +4 advantage over Matt. No PL this weekend so we’re back a week tomorrow- the week 24 fixtures are available for predicting on the main thread.
