What's the quality like in the now full resolution LP mode though?

Have read about using the DVD recorder as a de-interlacer. Have started a thread HERE Could some of the people talking about it on this thread please give any help.

Still, I would have expected prerecorded widescreen film DVDs to output a widescreen switching signal on Scart.

Sky+ box set to RGB. sky+ 'TV' SCART goes into ES10 AV2 SCART. ES10 AV2 input set to RGB. ES10 component phono plug outputs into TV. ES10 set to 'progressive'.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I found that there was jitter on horizontal lines, which is what you may be referring to regarding the EPG.

I've come to the conclusion that with my TV there is no overall benefit in using the ES10 as a de-interlacer. However, I still think there is an improvement in using the ES10 as an RGB to component converter, i.e. switching ES10 to 'progressive - off'.

You say turn off progressive....is that when viewing Sky?

Also did you connect scart to ES10 AV1 to your TV AV1 as I did that?

Thanks finbar and Graham for the clarification about WSS etc. It seems that at least Sony have tried to improve on Panasonics's DVD-R functionality in this respect with the "screen size" setting choice for each title.

It's annoying e.g. that I can't pass my anamorphic WS recordings on DVD-R to my Dad to play on his 4:3 TV. They stay squashed rather than letterboxed!

Yes, like you I find the jittery horizontals annoying. However, as I said, I think using the interlaced component signal of sky via ES10 does make the colours seem more solid, less flat and and lifeless and detail a bit sharper.

Some A/V receivers provide component video up-conversion from composite and s-video sources, so there may be something to be gained. I suppose it depends on how well each source or monitor handles each type of video signal.

It'll be interesting to see how good sky's Thomson HDTV box's component output is, as alas, I'm still all analogue for video connection.

So, does anybody else's ES10 have a problem sending the widescreen switching signal via scart with prerecorded dvd's? or is it just mine?

Sorry heckbulb, pressed movie DVDs do switch the widescreen via SCART on mine.

Hope this is the right thread to put this in...

I have just got an ES-10 and am partially impressed with it, I say partially as there is a few niggles with it....

It states in the manual that you can record from Sky using the personal planner, I have tried this but to no avail. I have Sky (but not Sky+) and the ES10 would record at all, making me do a timer record to record the program.
Is this because I have set my connections up wrongly?

Currently I have the ES10 connected to the TV scart of my Sky box, with my Video recorder (yes, I still need that!) connected to the VCR on my Sky box.
Then in the ES 10 I have sky connected to Av2 and Av1 goes to my TV.
I have Sky set to RGB and all is fine, except that I can't record using the personal planner.

I also don't have a standard co-axial ariel at all. Is this the reason why I have to manually set the clock etc?
Can it not get the time (and program names) from Sky? Or am I just hoping for to much?

Any help would be appreciated,

As far as I understand it, to record off the planner you have to use the vcr scart on the sky box. Which only outputs composite video. So if you want to record in RGB, (and with a dvd recorder you would want to!) you'll have to leave it plugged in to the tv out scart. And learn to use the timer function.
If you insist on usinfg the sky planner, you'll also have to set up your dvd recorder to record in composite, and enable the relevant scart input to start recording when it gets the signal. If I were you, I'd leave it in the tv out scart, and use the timer. It's not that difficult, just annoying.

MIne didn't have one but I bought ten from SVP Communications for £14.99.....

I`ve had my ES10 now for a week, I bought it to archive off my Sky+ box. I must say that I am very pleased, recorded a whole load of my sons "rubbish"!!! and even at 8 hours on the disk the quality is at least as good as vhs and upto 4 hours per disk seems very close to the original Sky image.
All for £174 and multiregion too

Mine didn't come with any disks at all, or even a Scart cable for that matter - it did come with a co-axial lead though!

This is a good recorder with high quality recording from TV or VHS. But why WHY does it record at 704*576. Most professional level DVD authoring software will re-encode anything that is not 720*576. Anyone wanting to rip out the resulting video and make their own DVD's on their computer should steer clear of this model.

I have no problem authoring 704x576 recordings from an ES10 with TMPGEnc DVD Author. 704x576 according to TMPGEnc is allowable under the DVD specification.

The TMPGenc DVD Author is not a professional level application. It's true that 704x576 is a legal DVD specification but for some reason even real top end applications like Sonic Scenarist (costing up to $10,000) always re-encode to 720 x 576 when outputting the DVD.

One problem with setting the machine up like this is that you can't record one (analogue) channel and watch another (Sky) channel. Or am I missing something?

My setup is:
Sky box TV out goes to ES10 (AV2) which then outputs to the TV.

This allows me to record from Sky in RGB, but I couldn't record from an analogue channel (say BBC1) and watch Sky (as Sky is looped through the ES10 which was set to BBC1).

Can anyone help please? As I had to record using our ancient video recorder (which didn't impress the Wife)...

I have an active scart splitter to avoid this problem. The output of sky goes into my splitter, and one output goes to the tv, and one to the dvd recorder.
I bought mine from www.altronix.co.uk - model AL-220-AMP. You'll also need a power supply for it (AL-220-PUK).
Another output goes into the dining room for the tv in there (just the other side of the wall), and the fourth goes through a rgb-s-video converter as I used to capture on the pc before I bought a dvd recorder. Hope this helps!

Please don't be offended but I have to ask, has the ES10 definitely been set up in the menus for a widescreen TV?

The only other thing I can think of is to check the scart lead is fully wired and perhaps make sure the television is connected to AV1 on the ES10.

Yes, it is set for 16:9 tv output. The UHF output works fine.

As for the scart leads, well, my digibox switches aspect via scart as it should and that is fed THROUGH the panny, so is using the very same lead to the TV.

Must admit it sounds like a faulty DVD recorder.

If the digibox is a Freeview box it could be that it's line 23 WSS that's actually working and the scart may still be dodgy but this is clutching at straws really.
