I don't watch Coronation Street much, but what happened to this story line? Is it still on going? Or was it just a week long plot device?

I was thinking the same today. It was initially portrayed quite well and Simon Gregson's performances at Christmas were great. Now, however, it seems to have been forgotten about.

Speaking from experience of having depression myself, it never goes away. I went through a very bad patch earlier in the year which resulted in me having various types of treatment and time off work. I'm now not too bad, am managing ok with just anti-depressants. It's not something that's talked about on a regular basis, just like any illness really. I have it, people know it and that's it.

I thought it was an awful storyline made worse with an awful actor

I have and still am going through the same thing. It doesn't go away sadly. Although some will use it to their advantage to knock you down.

No, you are wrong. I first had it in 1993 and I am still taking medication for it. It never goes away. Once you have had true depression it remains with you for good. I get good days and bad days.

The actual illness of clinical depression never goes. Once you've got it you're stuck with it. Treatment can help to control it up to a point but it can't get rid of it.

They will revisit when the time is right like Stacey's bipolar

I agree. I have been on meds since I was 23, (35 now) had various counselling, therapies etc and although I have good patches you get the bad ones as well that can come without warning.

Maybe you were born with your a chemical imbalance... Steve's depression was bought on by a chain of events

He got better overnight

No problems or side effects from meds

No long term counselling

No physical symptoms to speak of, apart from no sex

No being so down he spends days in bed

I thought they'd researched this and we're going to do a realistic portrayal, as a nurse, it's been crap

A lot of people can through brief periods of depression and come out just fine... It never has to be a entire game changer.... I;m pleased Steve is now ok

Terrible portrayal of depression I thought. Steves acting was terrible. They should of chosen an actor who could actually act well to do it.

Roy Cropper seem's permanently depressed... When's the last time he had a laugh

It's not in Roy's character to go out on the lash down the pub like the other characters, he's quiet and reserved and enjoys his hobbies and visiting museums.

I agree. It was a bit like:

Steve: I've got clinical depression....*
*Steve sighs and pulls a sad face*

Michelle: Leave Steve alone, he's got CLINICAL DEPRESSION!"
*Steve sighs and pulls a sad face*

This is a popular misconception if ever there was. People like Roy Cropper may often appear dour and miserable when infact they are quite alright within themselves, whereas there are people who might appear more outgoing, even quite happy who are simply placing a front to the world and who are in some cases literally dying inside and horrifically low, and have no confidence or self esteem either but somehow manage to hide the darker aspects from the wider world, and even their families.

I'm far from impressed with the development of the Steve depression story. Much like everything in CS nowadays it has been treated superficially. Infact they have treated it in a typically clichéd manner. Shame on them.

Isn't his dependence on the dog a clear sign of his depression? IMO he's totally using that as a crux and coping mechanism. His obsession with the thing is bordering ridiculous but it's understandable that he sees the dog as bringing him happiness at one of the worst times of his life, and feels dependent on having it around to keep himself balanced.....that's how I saw it anyway!
