Mods please make this a Sticky in the Sky and Sky+ sections.

Q: When will box xyz get the download?
A: When you get it! Only a very small part of Sky staff know the schedule and these guys are connected to the conditional access systems. ie. they don't post confidential stuff on here!

To quote the official line: 'Everyone will get it by summer'.

Q: Can I force a download for my box?
A: If the code download has not been sent for your version of box you are just hurting your finger by pressing the backup button.

Q: Do I have to be on a specific channel on the EPG to get the download?
A: No

Q: I live in Surrey, when are Surrey getting the download for box xyz?
A: Downloads are done by box version not where you live

Q: Do I need my phone connected for the download?
A: No!

Q: How do I know I have the download?
A: Press the help button whilst watching a channel. If nothing happens you don't have the latest software

Q: When will Sky+ boxes get the update?
A: See answer to first question...

Q: With the new code download can I kill the red button icon completely?
A: No

Q: Can I update the software myself using a PC?
A: No

Q: I work for Sky and just received an e-mail about a new download, shall I post it here?
A: Read your contract of employment very carefully....

Q: Why can't I post details of a new download?
A: The download may not happen due to numerous reasons...you will just annoy customers and customer service guys...

Q: What time do updates occur?
A: Usually around 5 AM

Does the box have to be on standby or do you have to be watching it for it come though? Or doesn't it matter?

Viewing a channel or in standby does not matter. If you are watching it at the time it will go into standby.

When you take it out a standby the new software will be present.

It is done by version of box, not by what package (if any) you subscribe to

1. Is it possible to prevent a download from happening? I want to record something at 5am, and am worried the box will restart.

2. Once a download is available (confirmed by users of the same make/model), how can I manually download it, assuming I "accidentally" unplugged the power supply overnight?

No you can't prevent it

Switch off at wall, switch back on whilst holding 'Backup' on front of box (not on remote). Box will now download the software

I unplug my digibox every night between 11.30pm and 8am. Will this mean I will never get the new software download?

You will have to force the update once you know it is present.

You could just leave the box on overnight. It is no more different to leaving the fridge, microwave, etc on.

Yes I know 'FOR A FACT' that the download will put your box into standby when the 'go' button has been pressed for the download.

Remember Sky+ can record when in standby so the worst you are going to get a bit missed in the middle of the recording if you are doing a recording in the early hours.

With the new software it is possible for parents to lock certain channels on the EPG from prying eyes.

This stops some randy teenager trying to bypass this by adding channels via another route that will not be PIN protected as they will not have an EPG number.

What "Go" button is that?
I was suggesting there may quite possibly be a "lock" feature where a program that's been set as a reminder will suspend the reboot until it has finished.

Great statement that too many sky employees cause more problems by posting than they solve. Although it was actually an sky employee's brother that spilled the beans originally (if memory serves me well)

The procedure that Sky do so that over the satellite it says 'here is the new code version xyz for the so and so box and take the download now'.

This will only happen the once and not that many people are recording watching in the early hours.

If you have some sort of mechanism that can stall downloads there is a good chance that would cause more problems
