What are we are missing by not having a later software version, and what is the advantage of 'auto standby' please?
Some say auto standby will save the planet!

We just press the button to go to standby...

Trouble is it won't start up since last night - that should help the planet

I quite often use Auto view but I don't know how to set the box to switch on and then off again when the program has finished, are there some instructions some were I can download or any advice would be welcome. I have auto stand bye set to off.

Hi all, 1st time posting but have been an anon for a while.
Noticed a few Questions about Software..

To Perform a Software Download -

Remove Power Cable , Wait 2 secs, Press and Hold BACKUP ( On The Box - NOT Remote ) Plug power in Whilst still Holding BACKUP.
Wait for All 4 Lights to illuminate at the front.
Release BACKUP

DOWNLOAD IN PROGRESS

To Perform a Hard Drive Reset ( CLEARS EVERYTHING )

Remove Power Cable , Wait 2 Secs, Press and Hold LEFT & RIGHT on the box. Plug Power in Whilst Still Holding Keys.
Wait for Chevron on the box to Spin ( Playback indicator )
Press SELECT

( ALWAYS PERFORM DOWNLOAD AFTER HD RESET )

If you need Software Versions for your Boxes Please Ask- As I Have the List in Front of me.

STD Boxes Should ALL be 1.2S4FI ( Except Pace B1 - 4FJ )
Sky + & HD are Dependant on Manufacturer.

Hope This Helps

Just to add , on Sky+ and Sky HD I would put the box in standby first and allow the HD to spin down BEFORE removing the power

Hi Tom, just thought I'd update you on my Mum's Sky Digibox, it has now finally updated (after a week of problems) to O/S Version 1.2S4FJ and EPG Software Version 3.7.6, which seems a lot newer than the original 3.1a.5 and it works ok at last. Seems you just have to be patient with these things! Thanks for your advice.
Steve
My Amstrad 550.033 has just done this.

Can't really see any difference yet.

Leave it connected and switched on or in standby. The update will come sooner or later, but be patient. The current software version you have is perfectly stable, so I wouln't worry too much.

Yes, My standard Sky digibox (Pace DS430N) updated overnight as follows:-

Model 1.0.55 (was 1.0.53)
Version 9F0A01 unchanged
O/S 1.2S4FM (was 1.2S4FJ)
EPG Ver 3.8.8 (was 3.7.6)

Can't see any differences but haven't tried all menu options.

My Thompson standard sky box seemed to have an update the other night. The only difference I have noticed is when going into the system health check menu I dont have to put a code in, it brings everything up (not like vomiting!), but doesnt really tell much more than what can already be seen on the system details menu.

mine is bricked with that new update, i used to leave it on all night but now it switches off and when turned back on its on the usual cs channel that happens when software is updated.

A right pain and cant believe sky would release duff software in this day and age. I have an old box that can revert to.

Well, my DS430N has updated and I hope there will be no problems. This has been a great little box so fingers crossed.

UPDATE! My box has now started to go into standby but I think I know how to stop it happening. I removed the expired card which was only good for regional ITV anyway. Since doing this it has not happened since. I reckon its another ploy to sell white cards.

My DS430N box is also switching itself off as if from the mains. I have a new white card (for channel 5) so in my case its not 'cause the card has expired, if it keeps doing it I'll try taking the card out too.

Thought it was my DS430N going AWOL until I happened to be at my daughter's house and hers did exactly the same thing. It's driving me mad as it cuts out seemingly randomly and I don't have another box I can use; so Sky will either have to roll me back to the old version or send me a different box, or I will threaten cancellation as I consider their upgrade is now compromising my enjoyment of their service.

Is there any contact point in Sky (or maybe Pace?) to get definitive information on this issue?

I ask because I have a 430N happily working on 3.7.6 and as a precaution I am switching off at the mains plug overnight for the time being to hopefully avoid an update.

Interestingly I have also just acquired a Pace DS440N. It was on 3.6 so I did a forced update last night and the release that was loaded was 3.7.6. Would that imply that Sky have temporaily halted 3.8?

I must add that I have no contractual relationship with Sky, the boxes are just used without subscription on FTA channels. I have no axe to grind against Sky, as FTA boxes recued from the skip are a great way for many folk to ease gently into the delights of digital TV. Unfortunately, as we have seen, it makes us beholden to the great software providers in the sky (small "s"...or maybe capital "S"?).

I guess if these wonderful old boxes gradually get zapped I'll just have to go BBC/ITV Freesat. Or buy a £150 terrestrial aerial installation for Freeview (we are in the depths of the Thames valley with low signal).

Presumably for those owners of 430s on subscription it is a golden opportunity for Sky to offer an upgrade to HD when they report the fault...or am I just being paranoid?

A point I have made before (just in case Sky read this) ...by Sky offering a teeny bit of support to us FTA viewers using old boxes, there is always a chance that we will see a program on the subscription channels EPG that tempts us to take out a subscription. That must be one of the best and cheapest ways of marketing Sky subscriptions.

nice post, when I did the forced update I got ver 3.8.8??? I might try agin in case they rolled back. Trouble is I leave my box on all the time so if they issue it again same old story.

And Iwould say sky are desperate to get everyone on HD boxes.

I can't believe this thread is so quiet! At least two other of my acquaintances with Pace 430N boxes got updated automatically to 3.8.8 and are having problems with the box switching off.

Is there anybody with a trouble-free 3.8.8? on any box? ...and is it just people without a subscription card? (as are my acquaintances).

If this sets a precedent then theoretically Sky could zap all boxes used as FTA. What's the next step?...OFCOM? Any thoughts on the legal situation. I suppose Sky could say they are their boxes anyway to do with whatever they like.

Phoned sky the other day and was told categorically that no EPG updates have been rolled out to the standard sky box recently
and was also told it HAS to be a box problem!! So my question to myself was, did the person I was speaking to know what I was
talking about or did they want my money for an engineer call-out, replace the box like for like, and then the problem to manifest
itself again when the box updated?
