I'm just about to dig out my 2 spare standard Sky boxes to do their annual forced software updates.

Can anyone tell me the latest versions for the below please:

1. Panasonic TU-DSB30
2. Pace DS440N

The Standard Def non-plus ones I have done recently are showing as 3.8.8, surprisingly even for the old Panasonic model you mention (what a great box that is!)....but the experts on here may be able to give you more definitive info.

Expect you know, but make sure you have good signal strength/quality first and switch off the washing machine/dryer/microwave . Nobody moves an inch in our house while a forced update takes place. Having said that i have never had the disaster that folk say will happen if the update fails..it just seems to stay on the old version if any problems ensue.

Many thanks. I agree about the Panasonic - amazingly, a quick check on ebay shows you can pick one up (Buy it Now) for £7.99 + £9.95 postage. They may be ancient now but that's a bargain.

Completely off topic I know...but can't resist saying that the Pan 30's do get VERY hot, so if in their long life they have had cats sitting on them or Radio Times plonked on top, they can get a bit unreliable. Some folk even fitted fans inside them! ... and there was a while (about 10 years ago!) when certain lnbs had a problem interfacing with them... (satcure.com had all the details). Otherwise lovely boxes. I couldn't believe it when I recently upgraded flawlessly to 3.8.8 without a murmer.

Yes, mine was always given plenty of ventilation space (although sister-in-law's in Spain endured cats and Summers to die for without problems).

I also had the LNB problem (loss of some channels) once when the LNB in my new house was about 3 years old. Changed to another brand and it lasted until Sky+ arrived.

Success! Both updated to 3.8.8 first time.

I inserted an old yellow house card and 'regionalisation' occurred almost immediately as did channel 5 appearing on the EPG.

However, although I could access them on the TU-DSB30, the yellow house card would not allow me access to the Parental Controls on the DS440N even though I knew the card's PIN (presumably because it had previously been used with a white viewing card).

Ah yes, had that problem myself and it was explained to me on these boards that a white card leaves a "footprint" rendering the blue cards pretty useless except for regionalisation. Did you receive Channel 5 from the epg with the blue card on the DS440N?

And yes you will need a white card with known PIN to unlock the Parental Control on the DS440. Its a real pain as when the parental control is locked it stops you accessing (but not adding) the Other Channels...which is needed if you want to watch channel 5 without a card

Fortunately it seems any active White card will do the trick as long as you know the PIN (it was probably originally set to the last 4 digits of the card number.)

i currently have 15 boxes here in tenerife waiting for normal upgrade,as cant get 11.778 on normal dishs.so an i understand that ANY box will update via force downloads even grundigs and amstrads from 1998,and even if software is 2.7 as some of them are

Europa, I am sure someone more knowledgable will give better information, but I recall reading that setting the default transponder to another frequency than the standard enable you to do a forced update in the non-UK situation. ..11739 ?? You do this in from the "secret" installer setup menu.

Also remember that one of the Pace boxes won't do a forced update, you have to rely on OTA update. Can't remember which one. Its either the 2600 or 430N.

Hope this helps and that one of the experts will flesh it out.

Apart from EUROPA's problem with not being able to receive the default transponder, success with forced updates depends on the software for the particular model being on the stream at the time (there are so many different models that it is simply not possible for all versions to be carried simultaneously).

I obviously got lucky and the 2 versions I needed were present at the time I did the deed - perhaps I should have bought a lottery ticket that day too!

well yes you can boot up by changing the default to say 11.739
but please correct me - you can ONLY do a forced download on 11778...please prove me wrong someone

Europa, there was an earlier post in this thread.....

I think he's in the Canaries? But I have no first hand experience of this...in fact I'd love to find a good source of information on tricks to use overseas. (eg like changing the default transponder).

Also to clarify a remark i made a few posts ago, its the Pace 2600C1 that cannot be updated by a forced download. You just have to wait patiently for Sky to initiate it. I once left one for about a month, but it did update in the end.

For all the other boxes I am actually pleasantly surprised how often they update (forced) successfully ...maybe 8 out of 10 time its done first go, without having to retry, even Panny 30s.

I have a problem with my sky +. It keeps displaying a message status stating loss of signal and prompting me to turn the box off for 5 minutes. Any help? http://www.magnatewebdesigns.co.uk

I have no speciaslist knowledge of that but, from what you're saying, that certainly appears to be a strong possibility.

I can't see a way around your problem except posting them back to the UK one by one and getting someone to force a download and send them back.

I don't think it'd be worth it though, the postage would be something like €25 each way.

the plan is to hook em up to a 3.2m dish which picks up 11.778 - you know its there as you get music on the menus - no music no 778
and do a force download, but i would like to know from the experts out there if you ALWAYS get an update every time when using 11.778
boxes are
3 x pace 2500
2 x amstrad drx200
3 x amstrad drx100
4 x grundig gds100
