My box must have updated through the night because it was on 998. But on on demand there is only showcase there so where has catch up gone?

The box has lost contact with your router.
This is quite common, just re-boot it and it will probably all come good.
If it doesn't, try re-booting the router too.

I am having the same problem since I accepted the Sky update, my On Demand now only shows Showcase. I've read people's suggestions of rebooting ..... but I am not very technical /pc orientated; I would give it a go if it were explained. Would anyone be willing to explain how to do this in very easy peasy terms so I can give it a try. I'd be most grateful.

As you have this update, you must have one of the latest boxes, so it's actually very easy.
Simply hold down the "off" button on your remote, until the red light on the box starts flashing.
The box will then shut down into "deep standby" mode.
Leave it a couple of minutes, and then bring it back to life by using the "Sky" button on the remote.
The box will start up from cold, and do a "soft" reboot.
It will take a lot longer than normal, but don't worry if it seems to take a long time before it will come out of standby.
Hopefully this will fix the problem.
If it doesn't, you may have to do a hard reboot by pulling out the power and re-applying it after a couple of minutes. This will completely reset the hardware.

No. Unless something goes wrong resulting in a full reset, which is extremely unlikely, reboots do not affect existing or future planned recordings.
If they did, you would lose all your recordings every time there was a power cut!

My Pace box just finally got the R008 update, however, I thought this was supposed to add Dolby Digital over HDMI?

There is no option on my box.

My understanding is that Dolby Digital over HDMI is only possible on the later Sky/Amstrad boxes, as the earlier boxes don't have the necessary hardware to support it.

Since the update, I have lost the ability to type a channel number onto the screen. The box lights to show it has received the instruction but nothing happens.

If I reboot it comes back for a while.

Weird thing is I can still select tv guide etc and move up and down lists but no numbers?

Changed batteries etc no difference.

Box is Samsung

When I switch on Dolby digital I only get sound on the first five channels. After them, nothing, which seems weird. Any ideas?

make of box, oops i can tell by software its sky/amstrad. give me a moment,

try this method, there is a way using remote as well but cant fnd it, check cables as well just in case and was it windy round your way,

Power off your Sky+ HD STB at the mains
Press and hold the <Backup> button on the top of the box (NB: Not the remote control!)
Power on the Sky+ HD STB at the mains, whilst continuing to hold the <Backup> button
Keep holding the <Backup> button until either the four LEDs on the front, to the right of the centre of the Sky box illuminate or the display on your TV confirms that the process has begun

The Pace update today was to move it from the 71p version that it was downgraded to a few weeks ago back up to the 74p version it had before Christmas. Or it was with ours.

Not sure I have noticed any obvious differences between the two as yet.

You might like to bookmark this: http://www.skyepginfo.co.uk/skyhd/skyplushd.html page. Its not an offcial Sky page but they are very good at keeping up to date with what firmware is latest for each box and showing whats on the DR stream (what you get from a forced update) and what you get from an auto update.
What is on the auto update stream is marked in red and what's on the DR stream is marked in green.
