Freezing cooked chicken
Granny McSmith
15-08-2015
Last weekend I bought some cooked chicken breasts from Asda, but didn't use them, so I wrapped them in freezer bags and put them in the freezer.

I was going to get one out to defrost and have for dinner today, but I chickened out (no pun etc) as I got worried about food poisoning.

Would you think they would be OK? It didn't say on the packaging that they were suitable for freezing, but I have frozen cooked meats in the past and they have always been fine.

This should be perfectly safe to eat, why are you concerned Granny?

Goodness me! I defrost and eat cooked chicken months after I've frozen it - not dead yet!

I don't know. I suddenly got dithery about them. Perhaps it's my age.

I'll defrost one tomorrow and if I get ill I'll blame you all!

Seriously, thanks for the replies.

No problem at all with those. Defrost them thoroughly and use as normal.

I'm a bit weird with chicken; I managed to give myself evil food poisoning by defrosting it the wrong way. Totally my stupidity, but it 'scarred me for life'

So we only buy chilled chicken, and snarf it down that day. What is not eaten is put down for the Beast (my cat) so eveyone's a winner

But that's me.

That may mean they've already been frozen once and then defrosted. It's fine to freeze them multiple times, except that each time you do, they sit around for hours defrosting and bacteria can multiply in that time.

You say you didn't use them: that sounds like they were sitting in your fridge for a few days before you froze them? The fridge will slow down the bacteria but not stop them.

To me this sounds like a borderline case, depending on how long the chicken was stored, and where, before you froze it. Chicken is not a food I would take chances with.
