Hollyoaks Cleo and Pete
I'm finding Pete an interesting and repulsive character for the way he treated Porsche and the way he talks to Celine but his relationship with Cleo feels like it hasn't been consistent, or how Cleo feels about him hasn't been.
It feels like they haven't decided what angle they're going with, the producers and actors have said she has been groomed and she doesn't see it as abuse but she clearly isn't comfortable with the intimacy and she does all she can to avoid him. On screen it's being played as if she wants to keep him around for her mum but they talk about it as if it's a consensual (as it can be) relationship. Anyone else seeing the gap here or have a different take on their relationship. |

After tonights episode and E4 episode I'm more confused by the direction of this storyline.
Surely Cleo would know her family would support her or is she truly attached to Pete, because I don't feel like they've written it well if that's the feeling they're trying to convey. |

Nope I agree. Once again what started out with potential has turned into farce and left us all wondering what the hell is going on. There is no consistency whatsoever and I once again revert to the opinion that they just make it up as they go along. It's beyond a joke. Come back Brookside all is forgiven!

I'm baffled with this relationship too. Cleo hasn't been groomed exactly and she has sisters really looking out for her that she could easily talk to. She has even been trying to get help from Harry but not Porsche
It's as if they want the paedophile or abusive story line but they can't be bothered to put in any effort to make it properly come across like that.

I think Cleo seems incredibly uncomfortable but then again she sometimes smiles and laughs at him and they both act like the sex is consensual even though Pete is so creepy and repulsive. He's very manipulative and controlling and I think she finds it hard to say no as she wants him as a "father figure" and also in Reenie's life. To be honest I thought he was going to violently and physically force himself on her but she went along with it even though she doesn't enjoy what's happening.
The actor playing Pete is doing a sterling job! The facial expressions and they way he speaks are so convincing. He's a very good actor. I agree that it's a confusing storyline but I think it's meant to be like that. Cleo has been groomed in my opinion. She is confused and it shows for me. I do think though that Cleo should speak to Porsche and would do. She knows Pete has done some disgusting things but goes along with having sex with him anyway. It's like she has mixed feelings about him. To be honest when she likes Harry I find it hard to swallow that she would let Pete have sex with her. I have a feeling someone will twig what is going on and it will be a man, maybe John Paul or Harry. I think Pete will be caught in the act and all hell will break loose. |

I don't for one minute doubt that Cleo has been groomed, and what is happening to her is out and out abuse, but the signals the audience is getting isn't clear.
There are times, where we are given the impression that she believes Pete loves her, and that she (over years of grooming and abuse) believes that she loves him much like Whitney and Tony in EE. She believed that he could be her boyfriend and eventually they could live happily ever after, she knew it was wrong, but had become dependent on him and infatuated by him. She relished his attention and felt their relationship whilst viewed by the outside world as wrong, was in fact genuine and normal. There are scenes where I feel Cleo feels like this, and then others where she seems repulsed by him, yet she rarely seems conflicted or confused by her feelings. Its all very odd. |

Even if Cleo doesn't see what Pete it doing to her as abuse, she is certainly old enough to know that what she is doing - having sex with her own mother's partner - is wrong. |

That's more how I see it from her side....she loves her mum and thinks it is wrong and is old enough to know what Pete is doing to her mum is wrong, but she believes he loves her. Maybe the avoidance is more about her not wanting the affair? What I found wrong is that he clearly had unprotected sex with her, yet had no discussion with her about it and she went to the clinic alone. Why didn't she ask him to use something, why didn't he check (surely he doesn't want to get his finance's daughter pregnant). Manipulative men would usually be stereotypically careful. What bugs me most is the mum? On what planet does the mum paper over her daughters birthday party with "engaged" when the party is full of her daughters friends who will have ZERO interest in her engagement, her daughter already hates her and she had to beg to come. And it's ridiculous the family wouldn't say it was wrong or pathetic. What mother wants to celebrate their "engagement" with a bunch of 20somethings anyway!

Cleo looks very uncomfortable and pressured, I pretty sure it was implied that he had abused her in the past before she went to boarding school, so this must of been going on longer then recently, he using his position and authority to groom and undermine her, it's seems like she feels if she doesn't do it it will split her family up.
It does have similar aspects to Whitney Dean's abuse storyline. |
