I agree with the first paragraph. That's how Simon used to be when he was much younger, coming out with these witty, all far to grown up lines which made him look like a smart arse. It got very annoying for me after a while.
For me Amy doesn't have to come out with these grown up come backs every single time she speaks, it will start to grate after a while. I like how she knows her mother is manipulative and seems to be berating her but she doesn't need to speak like someone 20 years older than she actually is in order to do it.
