Bypass proxy for? Adblock Plus for android
NaturalDancer
17-08-2015
Can anyone help?
I've installed Adblock Plus on my phone. The instructions said to:
Modify network config
Show advanced options and choose Manual
Set Proxy to localhost and Port to 2020.

But it doesn't say what to put under 'Bypass proxy for'. I've had a look at the website but couldn't find the info.

You can leave that blank.

How secure is all this? Surly you sending your web traffic through another unknown server so you don't know what they are doing with your data?

It wasn't giving me the option to 'save' but I've just gone back and it's worked this time. Maybe I put something in the wrong box.

Thanks

I've read reviews for Adblock Plus and all seems ok. These are the instructions to be able to use it. However I may uninstall it as it's not working for me.

No I was just asking as I don't like the idea of routing all my traffic through an unknown proxy. Who knows what it is doing it who is reading it?

I understand. It's just that it seemed to be a good adblocker to use. But as I say it wasn't working so I've uninstalled it now. Just looking for another as I'm sick of the adverts that keep appearing while I'm on DS on my phone. They haven't been too bad but I've had enough of them this morning.

If only Adblock Plus had a website to answer questions like that...

"Does Adblock Plus collect any user data?

We do not specifically collect any user data. Most of your data (e.g. what websites you visit) is never sent to our servers to begin with"

No traffic goes through any unknown server. The "proxy server" is the device itself (localhost), so that the ads can be stripped out. It's not necessary on rooted devices or for certain older versions of Android.

I suggest you stop scaremongering when you don't know how the software works.

Oh it must be OK then because the website says so. I must remember this when looking at dodgy websites as I'm sure in the q&a it will tell me "remember we take your details and commit fraud with them".

The point is so many apps recently have been accused of potentially allowing unauthorized access to phones, something like this i'd think twice about.

But its up to everyone else to decide what they feel safe with.

Might be silly, but if you use Firefox browser on Android, you can add adblock plus and lastpass, they work just like in the desktop. Adfree and password storage

Do you trust the password managers? Never have done as something tells me this is the sort of program any virus or backdoor would love to exploit? I guess its all a game of trust and what people do or dont.

Yes, Lastpass uses a mix of encryption and 2 factor authentication with Google Authenticator for example, their are several other secure methods than can be used. The data they hold is only ever decrypted client side, so when you save your passwords to Lastpass they are uploaded to the cloud iin encrypted form. Even if that were compromised all hackerd would see is a bit of 0s and 1s. They take it seriously, and the setup I have with them gives me confidence. The methods available outstrip that of any other competitor like 1password. Their level of encryption supposedly equals or exceeds that of military level.

In my job we have a similar system when using laptops off site, its a keyring but attached to the laptop and my ID. Lastpass is far stricter, they email you when ang change happens to your password (most cases its you thats done it).

I will never say it can be breached, but I have confidence in them I pay the small fee each year for premium. Plus they are cross platform, on most main OS (even blackberry and windows phone).

Adblock Plus didn't work. It kept saying 'waiting for traffic at port 2020'. I'd set the Port to 2020.

He means to Firefox browser as an add on.

So download Firefox and then go to the add ons and search for adblock plus.
