Old "New Wave."
Doghouse Riley
18-08-2015
Trawling through some old YouTube videos I came across this.

As one contributor on the attached comments page said; "and some think Lady Gaga was original."
It's been available for six years, but it surprised me that it had nearly 2M hits. So they must have been popular, but I don't remember them.

Fairly popular in the 80s in the US... and you still hear that song all the time on 80s stations. It hit #42 on the Hot 100 chart back in its day.

Here are a couple of other examples of 80s songs that are well known in the US but less popular in the UK:

The Church - Under the Milky Way - #26 in the US. #90 in the UK.

Real Life - Send Me an Angel #29 in the US.. failed to chart in the UK (wait, really?!) - this song should also go into the worst music videos thread. I'd rather watch someone dance on a BMX bike....

I looked up those videos. I remember The Church just about, never heard of Real Life.

And then I noticed The Tubes' 'She's a Beauty' listed alongside. That's another single that was popular in the U.S. but failed in the UK. I guess we were disappointed how the creators of 'White Punks on Dope' and 'What do you want from Life?' turned out!

And I suppose Transvision Vamp didn't really cut it in the U.S?

Yeah.. I wouldn't've been able to tell you the name of the band, but I've definitely heard She's a Beauty often enough to know the lyrics.

I've never heard that Transvision Vamp song... parts of it sound familiar, but I think that's just because it reminds me of some other songs.

I like this thread. We often think that the US and UK charts are very similar.. especially when it comes to new wave since so many of the new wave bands in the 80s were british. But there are those outliers where a song was huge in one country and practically unheard of in the other.

Here are some more examples:

The Cars - Shake It Up (#4 in the US, didn't chart in the UK)
The Motels - Suddenly Last Summer (#9 in the US, didn't chart in the UK)
The Romantics - Talking in your Sleep (weird one, #3 in the US.. didn't chart in the UK, but a cover by Bucks Fizz hit #15 in the UK)

Here's one from the 90s. Hit #18 on the US charts, didn't chart at all in the UK:

Toad the Wet Sprocket - Walk on the Ocean

A lot of these bands turn up on the sound tracks of films and movies.
I discovered Vertical Horizon that way. 'You're a God' being used in Bruce Almighty and then this song was a hit in the US but again did little in the UK

'Everything you Want' from 1998

Or another Old New wave band 'Til Tuesday and the incredible 'Voices Carry" from 1985

I'm a huge fan of Til Tuesday and Aimee Mann.

Aimee Mann made fun of Voices Carry in Labrador:

Apparently, the lead singer, Dale Frances Bozzio re-formed the group "Missing Persons," a few years ago and they were regularly performing at venues across the USA..

Here she is in 2009. she'll be 60 now..

Missing Persons! I thought they were great. I was living in Los Angeles around this time and they were pretty big there, their music was always on the radio and they were all over MTV. I had their album 'Spring Sessions M' which had 3 great tracks on it:- 'Words', 'Walking in LA' and 'Destination Unknown'. I think they kind of faded into obscurity a bit after that though. Although years later their guitar player Warren Cuccurullo re-emerged as Andy Taylor's replacement in Duran Duran. I don't think he's still with them these days though.

Another group who were big over there around the same period but are pretty much considered 'one hit wonder's' here were Berlin. (All this was about three years before 'Take My Breath Away'). They had a brilliant album around 1983 called Pleasure Victim. Best track, probably 'Sex....(I'm A...)', https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpYNwFGaMik 'Masquerade' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azr2ooLlfzQ was good too. Oh, and 'The Metro' also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgERvAcay7g
They were considered very 'new wave' and were popular too. I saw them live at the Greek Theatre in LA, (quite a big outdoor venue, around 5,000 capacity), in summer 1984.

Another group who were considered 'new wave' and were always on MTV (with 'Saved By Zero', 'Red Skies', One Thing Leads to Another', etc) were The Fixx. Who are all English I think, but to my knowledge they never had a hit single here.

Ugh.... Toyota has totally ruined The Fixx for me.

This commercial, with a cover version of Saved By Zero on a loop, used to be in heavy rotation:

There were even articles about how irritating the ad was:

I thought all ads were irritating which is why I avoid them whenever able, amusing that this one obviously stirred up passions a bit more than usual. The Fixx probably done quite well out of it though, I think having your music featured normally means a nice pay day.

I just done a brief google of this band, interesting that they're still going and regularly touring and seemed to have being doing so since the early 80's, albeit with a few predictable departures, re-formations, etc along the way.

That is a terrible track. No wonder it wasn't a hit here. Trying too hard to sound like Lena Lovich and look like Debbie Harry.
