Same fault with 2 small LCD tvs,
our 7 year 16in Grundig freeview LCD tv has developed a strange fault. While on, the screen goes black, but the sound keeps going. It still responds to remote control while like this as well. This odd fault appears to happen regardless of source, so built in freeview, or external dvd. If we switch it off for a while - it sometimes works properly again - for a while.
We also got an even older LCD which has a separate freeview box - and this LCD has just started to do the same thing. Guessing not worth the cost of repair - but would like to know the cause. |

Is it the screen going black or the backlighting? If you look very closely at the screen when it happens, perhaps shining a torch on it as well can you see a picture? If so then the backlighting is failing. Either the tubes or the driver electronics.
You can sometimes also tell by the shade of grey the screen goes. Sometimes if the backlights are on but no image is displayed the screen is a slightly lighter shade of grey than when the set is turned off meaning the backlights are also off. |

Almost certainly back-light failure, on better makes the set would shut down and flash an error code, but it's common for the cheap badged makes to continue working without the back-light. Personally, from a service point of view, I much prefer the cheap set solution

on both the screens 100% black - no grey, or ghost/faint image that I can see. Just like turning the set off.

A common fault on many sets, made by Beko (of which the 'Grundig' could very well be one) is failure of some small blue high voltage capacitors on the inverter - the problem is sourcing suitable replacements though. |
