I always thought the pound shop items were rejects from the manufacturer ie broken biscuits, light bulbs made faulty and so on.. but with so more branded name items coming in at a pound, surely they cannot all be under-weight or rejected factory ones..
is it simply a case of pound shops undercutting the super markets ????

No, its a case of them buying shorter shelf life products in bulk at a massive discount and selling them very quickly.

Also they often source from China and buy lesser known foreign brands, and import stuff in such a way that often bypasses VAT restrictions.

If it's branded stuff from the UK then it's usually a smaller size than the supermarkets.

I used to work for 99p Stores, I know all the secrets

Toothpaste seems to be an exception; the Uk supermarkets seem to have switched to shrinking the toothpastes (for a popular brand) to smaller 75ml size but not the price.

Looks like the pound shops get their stock on the grey market, as the toothpaste on sale is the same thing but has different languages on the outside of the tube and in larger 100ml.

I'm sure they have. I'm just questioning how delicious they are.

As someone who has had both, the Westler's taste better, and I have been known to rather enjoy them from time to time... but I have to admit that they are nothing much more than slimy slabs in a can. Most on here will stamp their feet and scream, but I'm sure if they could in some way be sold as organic, they'd be the wasp's wotsits.

I bought a Goblin steak and kidney pudding a few weeks ago from the pound shop as I have a vague memory of enjoying them when I was a kid.

It was without question one of the worst things i have ever tried to eat 😷

Some of their products aren't as good value as you think. Our local one has tunnocks caramel wafers for a pound, they're only 79p next door in Home Bargains and their small packet of chocolate digestives is beat by the larger packet half price in supermarkets.

Pound shop items and bargain store items I take with a pinch of salt. B&M I've noticed food items tend to have a short shelf life. The manufactures also do special discount store size/quality - for example walkers do a 5 pack of crisps from the pound shop as opposed to 6 from a supermarket. As others have said some items at £1 (or 99p) are even overpriced so I do tread carefully

'tis a dangerous path, I loved Findus Crispy Pancakes in the '80s but don't want to give in to temptation and sully the memory

To be fair, they were crap in the 80's, too.

I often buy my ham, pork & stuffing and sometimes roast beef, when they have it. 200g for 99p and it's lovely.
Also buy sweet and savoury biscuits sometimes as well.
I bought a big Panettone in the 99p shop last year and it was great, real bargain.
