Yeah, its unfair when the others reveal this when it should come from a band. They probably wanted to reveal that after the album campaign. The real indicator will be if it really turns out that they wont tour with it. Thats a bit abrupt though, a proper goodbye would have been better.

Good for them. They have done well, worked hard and deserve a break!!!

To be fair, One Direction have actually done far better than anyone probably expected. I don't even think Simon Cowell expected 1D to become such a phenomenon in the way they have.

I'm sure in 2020 when the money starts drying up all 5 of them will reform and have another tour just to help boost their bank balance.

Whats the bet that at least one of them goes off the rails and does an Ami Winehouse thing.

Im not surprised, they must be exhausted.

You don't become the wor.ds biggest band with just catchy singles.

And to all the people saying "hallelujah", please tell me, did the existance of 1D really affect your life that much?

I admire the spirit, but it'll make zero difference. as a fan, don't you think they deserve a break ? Is it not selfish to expect them to carry on regardless ?

Exhausted.....

It's not like they had Iron Maiden's schedule in the 80's is it?

Seriously though, they are product - that's all. The music that's being released under there name isn't music they'd listen to, so it's probably hard for them to invest in a product that they have little interest in. They have made their money - now they can go away and do something that interests them more, or retire.

The afore mentioned Iron Maiden release their 16th album next month (which will go to number 1 in numerous countries, without any radio play whatsoever) - they still do it because they have a passion for what they create it and it's what they live for.

It wasn't so much their existence but their singing that bothered me. They became the world's biggest band because of their cheesy music and their good looks.

I dont like when fans make petitions when this happens. I mean, when a band decides this, its because they dont want this anymore, they want to move on. If you are a true fan, you should respect the decision even if you hate it. Its a bit selfish if you want them to continue despite the fact they are unhappy doing it.

I can't believe how devastated people are on Twitter goodness knows how they are going to cope with real problems in life. As for starting a petition these should be used for real causes like the Yulin Cat and Dog meat festival not four multi millionaire young men that want some time off.

Exactly.

They've done well. Not my cup of tea at all, but they deserve a break.

Well I wouldn't say it affected my life, but I did get sick of seeing them everywhere Couldn't switch on the TV or go into a shop without seeing them. Going on Twitter was annoying at times as well as something 1D related was always trending and some of it would end up on my TL.

The world’s most successful band will NOT launch a tour to support their fifth album, a move likely to devastate their millions of fans around the world.

That means their last full concert will be at Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on October 31.

BIB Not sure if that is actually quantifiable..is it? maybe the most succesful current boyband? ..before another one comes along from the X Factory.

It's pretty unusual for big name acts to release an album every year these days, (Coldplay only release one every three years), so a year off (if that's all it is) is hardly a split.

It all depends whether this is truly just hiatus or they are just saying it is. If they will truly go just on a break to relax then there is a high chance they will come back. However, if they plan to launch their solo careers in the meantime, it obviously means they crave solo solo success. And if even one of them have just a slight chance for a decent career then they won't be back for sure. Just look at Nsync, how long they dragged their fans thinking they will be back one day.

Besides, they all want solo success for sure, they all came to X Factor for that, Simon was the one who made them into a boyband. And now they are thinking this is the right time to make it or break it as a solo singer. But doubt any of them will be the next Robbie or Justin.

Plus, it is not wise to have too much time off when you are a boyband - Backstreet Boys were never the same after they came back from 3 years break. Sure, they had some success, but they weren't as popular as before and now they are struggling.

On the side note, I think this isn't just a silly gossip from The Sun - the fact that 1D aren't saying anything or that their people are just saying "no comment" probably means it is true. If this isn't then they would immediately say it is untrue.

There is a clip being used on BBC News of some sort of launch.. the band walk onto a little stage where Cowell is waiting for them. And the camera cuts to the crowd and the most fake looking display of camera flashes goes off. As if the flashes were super imposed onto the footage afterwards. It looks so fake.

To be fair to NSYNC, I don't think that was a deliberate move and from what I've read, there was every intention for the fourth record. It just didn't work out. They actually appeared together on various occasions between 2003 and 2005 and then the split was finalised the year after.

Aw, I liked their catchy wee poppy tunes.

Best for them to split while they are still young and cute though.

At least Iron Maiden have been fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to start up, build up a loyal following through countless tours over the years, continue releasing music and have fans that will buy the album and continue to support them when they tour.

Many bands these days won't even release 16 singles, yet alone albums because of the way the UK music industry has changed.

Had 1D's second album bombed completely, would they have been given the chance to continue to the point they released a fourth album? I'd be very surprised. Right now, Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys are the only bands (of recent years) still going who could still be successful when (if) they get round to releasing their 16th album in years from now.

Other than that, I don't think the UK music industry has any other bands who will get close to releasing 16 albums.
