Just wondering, what are people's experiences with BT Infinity?

My ex-Virgin Netgear router is on its last legs so I need to get a new one. I could just go out and get a new one, but BT (whom I'm not with at the moment) have just run fibre up the main road through my village, and I was thinking of jumping ship.

Obviously it's only FTTC, so it wouldn't be as fast as if I had fibre to my house, but it's got to be an improvement on what I have at the moment - I'm currently with TalkTalk, but only as I was one of the ex-Virgin National customers whom Virgin sold to TT, and the speeds are lousy (DL 0.98Mbps, UL 0.80Mbps)

I don't really have much in the way of alternatives as far as I can see, since Virgin Broadband is out (there is no cable where I live) and I won't have Sky as I can't stand Murdoch's politics.

What do people think? I'm sure there are plenty of gripes (it is BT, after all), but it's got to be better than what I have at the moment, surely?

Go to the BT Broadbanc checker and put your phone number in see what speeds you will get. Fibre in any shape or form is a huge improvement compared to ADSL

It's worth also checking to see how far you are from the new cabinet as the distance is relative to the speed you will get. Most ISP's will be using the BT infrastructure so the speeds will, in theory, be much the same whoever you decide to go with.

Bear in mind that BT is not the only internet provider you can get via FTTC (or indeed FTTP if available) - they're one of many. If you don't want to go with BT, there are plenty of quality ones around - e.g. Zen

I've had BT Infinity 76Mb for 2 years now, almost always get 75Mb speeds. Upload isn't important to me, latency time is good enough being a gamer. I've never had to call customer support.

I had Virgin Media before, couldn't really complain much. I had to ditch VM because my current home does not have VM digital (faster than 20Mb speed).

I think I pay a combined £43/month to access BT Infinity. My contract ended about 11 months ago.

I'll soon have Hyperoptic 1Gb FTTH for £60/month.

Been with BT since my cab went live in 2011 and never looked back. Its been very reliable and the Home Hub 5 gives me near wired speeds over 5GHz, my PC has an n rated card in it and the HH5 is in the next room with a brick wall between them and i get just over 74Mbit down and just over 18Mbit up.

I personally don't notice any difference since I went fibre from adsl other than my upload speed. I consistently got 21 / 1.3 out my adsl. In fact maxed out 24 when I was with be*
On fibre it varies so much I can get 18-34 down and 7-9 up I guess depending on congestion.
With my net habits everything worked fine on adsl...no buffering etc and still works fine on fibre. I don't download files other than off psn which is slow whatever u have.

It depends on what you use your Interweb connection for. If you do a lot of downloading, under some circumstances BT can and will block your attempts. They do this because as a large concern they are required to by law. Smaller concerns, some very well regarded if you do a little research, are not forced to do this because their customer base is smaller, and so mind their own business.

My cab is chokkablock and my connection never changes, same speed 24/7

As others have said - put your phone number into the DSL checkers to get a decent estimate of what your line can provide. It may be the case that FTTC isn't available to you even though it's on your street so you'd better check.

Prior to Infinity, I avoided BT like the plague. I was with ADSL24 and then Be* for years. But when Infinity became available, I switched, and it's been great. On Infinity 2, BT don't block protocols or the amount of data you use. Speed tests always give me my maximum speed, even at busy times.

Of course - other FTTC providers are out there - but watch out for those with tedious usage caps and those that block certain protocols (e.g. TalkTalk, EE).

We have today been informed that we can order fibre. We've been with Plusnet for years but want to move to BT. Please can someone confirm that we don't need to inform Plusnet and is it a seamless changeover for phone and broadband?

Assuming you have completed any minimum contract it is totally seamless! Just order from BT who will get a changeover date from OpenReach - doing this automatically informs PlusNet and lets them know the same date.

It it even more seamless than normal changing to or from Plusnet as they use BT exchange equipment (cf. Sky who use their own)

Got BT Infinity 2 when it came to our area - Consistently getting 50Mb+ down and between 15 and 20 MB upload. No problems, except the HH3 failed and managed to secure a HH5 from BT, the latest version - gives alternative uncongested 5GHZ frequency (if your devices can connect). Same speed all day very day and regardless of time of day

I been with BT Infinity since early 2011 and upgraded to BT Infinity 2 in late 2013 when the local green cab 2 streets away from me got upraded to up to 78mb speeds.
I get just over 65mb speeds 98% of the time. I have only ever had 2 or 3 minor problems with Infinitry in almost 4 years.
Only major problem i had over a year ago turned out not to be a problem with infinitry but a fault with the phoneline and I was without BT services for almost 3 days.
Infinitry had improved since I first got in back in early 2011.
I have also had BT TV with Youview over 18 months now.
I'm 98% happy with the BT services.
