George Benson

Still going strong at 72. Montreux Jazz Festival July 2015

Live performance. His percussionist/back-up vocalist, Lilliana de Los Reyes, is quite cute too. She gets a bit of vocal solo in the close-out.

Thanks for posting this.

Really enjoyed it.

I really liked him up to and including his Breezin' album which I still have on vinyl. I think that was the first album he began to sing on and he does have a decent voice as well as being a great jazz guitarist up to that point.. But after that he became very bland, predictable and boring as he cashed in on the disco/funk scene and I totally lost interest..

I think Wes Montgomery...

...was his inspiration when he uses octaves in guitar solos of jazz numbers.

Saw him at Edinburgh Playhouse back in something like 2005. Absolutely fantastic.

Although the couple next to us decided it was a good opportunity to blether and have a general catch up. I ended up saying "Excuse me, is George interfering with your discussion? I do hope so. Could you shut the hell up as we paid to listen to him and not YOU." I don't think they spoke again.

I think Wes Montgomery influenced a lot of guitarists, not least the late Emily Remler.

Yes, a very similar style to that of Wes.

The "octave style" of soloing, was very popular amongst some.

One of my favourites jazz guitarists was Barry Galbraith, he featured on a lot of jazz recordings, yet few people are aware of him.

I've had this track of his, of a Rogers & Hart composition on a composite album since my teens.
I put it on YouTube four years ago and it's had over 10,000 hits and a lot of positive comments.
Just look at his "side men," you have to be well respected to get these sort of musicians to play with you.

I also included a link in the write-up to an old USA TV pilot jazz programme (seems very dated now) in which he and other notable jazz musicians are featured.
