To be honest, I was being flippant. A more practical solution would be a second SIM that could share data/minutes, just as the US has had for years and we are beginning to see here.
Not everyone would want to take their 40GB 4G with them of course. Just as I don't complain because I can't take my home broadband with me.

Except:
* mifi units and phone tethering don't generally cope with the demands of an entire home and like to overheat if stressed
* they're wifi only, no ethernet (with some exceptions e.g. some models of Netgear that can be put into a "hub") - and they generally don't have proper wifi antennas to fill an entire home with coverage
* you have to worry about the battery if you keep it plugged into the mains for long periods of time
* most mifi units these days don't allow you to connect external antennas if that is needed in your location - I don't think any mobile phones allow it?
Fixed 4G routers tend to have none of these issues.

I'd agree, though I'd rather they offered a polished fixed 4G solution along side that - since they are apparently offering minutes with the plan, why not offer a 4G router that has phone ports!
