Humax
Hi, I'm getting fed up with sky and their high prices so am thinking of moving to Freest with a decent PVR. Please could you advise me on the following models as I assume (from there views I've read) that these are the best on the market? I just wonders what the differences were and also with the 500mb version of it is just 1/2 the size of a 1TB machine or were there's more differences than that.
HDR-1100S (1tb) HDR-1100S (500gb) HDR-1010S (1tb) Please could you also let me know there difference I'll find between sky and free sat? I only have the basic original under do don't watch much tbh. Thanks for your help. |

You've got it sussed. The 1010 is the older variant, the 1100 the newer variant. The 1100 is physically smaller but the interface is the same so it makes you wonder why they bothered. Presumably the 1100 is much cheaper to build due to it's smaller size and no display, no scart socket. The RRP is much lower than that of the 1010 when it was launched. As for Humax being the best on the market, they're the only on the market if you want freetime and wifi.... and some would say this lack of competition has made them complacent. Sadly the build quality on these boxes isn't great. See the other thread.

You can pick up a refurbished Humax Freesat+ PVR direct from Humax at considerably less than the normal retail price - they are running a special at the moment presumably to clear stock and it seems successful as a couple of models are already sold out. You can get an email alert for when models are back in stock.

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2094653 The main internals are likely to be identical as the same firmware supports all of the units. |

I purchased the 1TB Humax 1100s yesterday, picked it up at my local argos store as my foxsat HDR was just way too slow.
![]() I won't lie, I wasn't keen on the look either... It looked cheap and nasty when researching on the net but I went ahead and unboxed it and the build quality feels fine to me. I do think those buttons on the top look and feel nasty and cheap though! ![]() My 1100s is fast, very responsive and works well. I don't even have to point the remote at it directly to get it to work either. ![]() I am happy with mine so i'm going to keep it. |

I cancelled Sky a month ago after the recent price hike(begrudge paying nearly £80pm), just been switched off today. I have ordered the new Humax from Amazon and it's being delivered tomorrow. I will give my feedback on how the unit performs when I get it up and running. Amazon have a good returns policy, so if the Humax is not up to scratch it's going back. Fingers crossed.

How are you getting on with it Maccadanny? Any issues as I identified in the other 1100 thread?

I've just bought the 1100 500GB one from Argos and happy with it so far (only 4 days use though!). I had a 5/6 year old Icecrypt linux HD+ box which was great but over the last few weeks it's been freezing a lot, and the TV guide wouldn't populate anymore. On the Humax I've done timer recordings, love the On Demand stuff, and all the freetime features. Only thing I've not got working correctly is the Freesat App where you can set remote recordings. Yes it's a bit cheap looking but as it's gone in a cabinet behind tinted glass you can't see it anyway. I've kept the Icecrypt just in case the Humax goes wrong so I have a spare but I'm liking it

Only one drawback, because the unit is small the power supply is not built in so you get one of them awful brick transformers that you have to hide out of sight somewhere. I have never had a Humax unit before so i don't know if this is the norm with the power supply. |

So all in all i am very happy with it plus no £75 to pay to Sky every month!
And if you didn't want the subscription channels, why were you subscribing to a high package in the first place?. Quote:

I have never had a Humax unit before so i don't know if this is the norm with the power supply. It's not usually a 'space' problem, it's just convenient for the designers and for approval testing. Quite a few Sony TV's use the same technique, with 19.5V external supplies. |

You guy's that are saying it only looks a "bit" cheap and tacky, do you have the black or white version, i have only seen the white one and it was hideous. I think the black one will look better. On the white one it wasn't just the silver buttons that looked cheap, it was the quality of the white plastic, its hard to explain exactly what i mean, but lets just say it wasn't Apple like, or even on the same planet.

To be honest Z3man I couldn't give a toss how it looked if it was well built. Sadly both boxes I have had have been a load of tat and credit should be given to Humax for being able to introduce such inconsistencies to their production processes and sourcing of inferior parts.
I do know what you're saying about the look of it though. Flexible shiny black plastic like some sort of cheap kids toy, not an expensive tech product. |

I'd actually prefer it to be in a completely nondescript cheap as chips black plastic box with an extended IR receiver so I can hide it away completely or mount it on a VESA bracket on the back of my TV. They can then sack all the design staff and invest that money in the technology inside. This is especially true now as with HDR and Internet access, the majority of the time a user would have no reason to ever touch or interact with the box. My old Humax HDR has just died and while I think it had OK build quality I struggled to remember what it even looked like when I was searching for information on it at work (I couldn't remember the model number). Which just shows how little I look at it and how little I care what it looks like. So when my 1100S arrives, as long as it works... I care not a jot how it looks.
