finally took the plunge and bought myself a smartphone

Sony ... looks like its tied to vodophone but dont
think Ill be signing up any time soon

Just having fun with it on the wi fi internet ... asking google questions by speech and getting audio answers !

Think Ive got text to speech ability in there too, when I
figure out how to highlight text or cut and paste.

Getting f fox browser ... you have to agree to a whole set of demands.... we want access to your photos
we want access to your loction
we want access to your cameras ....

I gave f fox a miss and went on to dolphin browser
only to see a similar list of demands you have to agree to to be able to download the browser !

1984 has arrived !

It's the modern world, sign away your soul to get faster internet. There's a line in some french song that I heard a while back "for a place in the sun, they'd return to the Bastille", kinda fits in with it.

If you deny your browser access to everything then it can't do anything.

The one on your PC would have the same access - it just doesn't ask in the same way.

It's not like 1984 at all - you just don't understand why they need access.

Why do you not understand? It's 2015 not 1984.

This is how the Android system works, you get the choice up front, but can't change after. On a Windows, Linux or Mac computer you don't told. Only Apple is different and each app asks at the point it needs something, (and on Apple you can change your mind and block access without deleting the app). Android 6 is going to start doing something similar to Apple.

However most of these things are self explanatory, e.g. pictures access is needed if you want to save a picture from the browser to the gallery etc.

Don't forget to put a double layer of tinfoil over the top of the phone otherwise they can can still track and listen in to your conversations, even when you aren't on the phone.

I don't see how a smartphone is any more dangerous privacy-wise than a computer...

That's very true...especially after you have taped your camera up as they will be thinking you are up to no good!

Were they the correct file types?
You can use a file manager to see them on the phone.

What model Sony is it?

Are you sure they are MP3 files and not WMA or something? Where did these music files originally come from?

Being a Sony phone it'll have Walkman software on there for music playback, have yoiu put the files in a folder called Music? It can be on the SD Card then let the walkman software scan for a library. To name and add album covers I use MP3Tag which is free.

As for the permissions in the OP. I jumped ship from Android to Blackberry cause of all the permissions wanted (a lot of them just didn't seem necessary eg. why does an app to analyse my wireless signal strength at home need access to pictures, texts and contacts?) - the Blackberry runs the same android apps but for some reason they still work ok without the persmissions.

thinking about it, the files are mainly my own voice
made with audacity ... so maybe they are av ?

but you d think at least I could see them on my phone somewhere.... even if they dont play

Part of the reason I bought the phone was the thought that I could use it to play audio files.
its a more expensive one with 5 gig storage

i put some files in a folder called podcast
and some in a folder called media

Ill have to try putting them in the ... music... folder

So why do a half job?

If you were really serious about security you would have filled the hole with concrete and then built a patio over the top.

If you made them in Audacity, then only you can say what format they are. You can almost certainly convert them to MP3 though.

They are almost certainly audacity project files which aren't going to play on the phone
I doubt the OP has installed a required mp3 encoder.
