A new thread o discuss the new Radio X station/network.

Will typical XFM listeners warm to the likes of Moyles, Vernon and Vaughn? Or are they moving to making it more appealing to a wider audience?

So the London/UK version will be rebranding to Radio X - daft name for a station, Capital Rocks would have been a better name!

I guess XFM will continue in Manchester and Scotland

Agree. What a silly name. Capital rocks slightly better, but why the change?

Sorry I disagree as I think that sucks as well. The X part at least keeps the XFM:

I agree, FM as part of station names is becoming increasingly outdated. There's so many ways to listen to radio now, not just FM.

X Radio would have been slightly better in my Opinion.

Please don't get me started on Internet only stations that brand themselves as *********FM

In that case you could also add the name 'Radio *********' as being equally irrelevant to internet-only streams. TBH most people outside of radio know what FM stands for so I don't think it matters.

I take your point, but a while ago we ran out of station names.

What's wrong with keeping it as XFM why do Global need to change it. Can't see much appeal in Vaughan and Kay but I can see why they would want Moyles. With the shift to older presenters I presume the music will shift to more classic rock?

I think a lot of people will welcome JV back to a daily slot, I'm a little surprised he agreed though considering the way Global treated him on Capital but I guess the gig pays the bills.

The jury is out on Vernon. Never heard him on Radio 1 as I'm far too old to listen to Radio 1.

Presumably it's main home now will be DAB Digital so XFM doesn't really work. Simple really.

That was a long time ago (1988) - he did his time and he's had plenty of decent jobs since. What necessitated bringing that up?

FM is still the number one way though. And for a national brand the "shop window" of an FM presence in London is still an important ingredient. Look at how Planet Rock has struggled...

Moyles used to absolutely slate Vaughn on air...

will be weird to hear him promote him instead.

No it wouldn't, it will instantly put people off who don't like rock music. By keeping the brand less specific if allows them to have a wider playlist like XFM has at the moment playing artists like Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Cure and Jamie T.

If I'm honest, no. I certainly won't as I can't stand any of them, which is hugely disappointing because XFM is a favourite of mine, particularly because of Jon Holmes.

Vernon always seemed a bit 'old' for Radio 1, he was at the end of his T4 presenting stint when he joined and at the start of his light entertainment TV presenting career. Seems strange he only finished a few years ago.
That said and speaking as someone who really didn't like him back them, I really warmed to him as someone who genuinely loved radio and the music he was playing.
I would be surprised if he committed to a daily show on radiowhatever as he only did one day a week for most of his stint on R1.

If XFM in Scotland and Manchester rebrand as a separate name from X, wouldn't they need to create another broadcasting hub at global for a separate network of its own? They surely can't do a Smooth Extra, as both stations would have a different music policy?

Just noticed a newbie from Kerrang covering XFM overnights - Jack Oliver Saunders. I think he'll be part of the line-up? Although he's still freelancing at Bauer.

Global's do have a recent history of employing TV personalities and giving them a daily show eg. Andrew Castle and Kate Garraway.

Vernon's TV commitments these days seem to be just Family Fortunes, he seems to have lost his ITV appeal to Stephen Mulhern for anything else.
