It's not for me to make up the rules of the game. But I'd suggest that if your player is winning at the point he pulled out, as Sock was, you should be allowed to go to your back-up, in this case Thiem. Meanwhile, anyone who picked Sock's opponent would still go through.

But it ain't my game.

As somebody on Jack Sock and eliminated as a result of his injury can't agree with that view. Yes Sock was ahead 2-1 and on serve in the 4th. He may still have lost from that position. How do you judge what a winning position is? 3-2 up in the first set with a break? What happens if a player withdraws through exhaustion?

The rule is a withdrawal from a game is a loss. No interpretation required.

Fair points - its just bad luck.

Even Murray is losing atm so its a bit of a lottery anyway!

Fair enough, the rules are there at the beginning. And obviously Sock can't come back tomorrow and say 'can we continue the match now, I'm better?'

How do you judge what a winning position is?

I would say winning in sets and not behind on serve in the set in which the player withdrew. And I was suggesting transferring to back-up, not chalking it as a win for the injured player. But of course, they could be match point up and still lose, that's the beauty of tennis. Just a debating point, not trying to run Nathers' game for him, he's doing an excellent job!

You're taking it very well though, I get annoyed if I lose at tiddlywinks.

I'm out too because of the Sock situation, but a retirement in tennis is a completed match no matter what position the retiring player is in. Just bad luck in this case.

Don't get me wrong I like to win. Trouble is I'm not used to winning especially this game

ATP comp takes a big hit on Day 4 as 6 drop out.

Jack Sock fainted on court and was forced to retire from his match against Ruben Bemelmans. Mark F, Nathers7, The Net, Sam_Clarke1 and dean michael are all out as a result. dtcdtcdtc was eliminated after Nicholas Mahut lost in 4 sets to GGL.

8 through to Day 5.
