Cat with Dandruff

What causes Dandruff?, she's mainly black which doesn't help. She's two, is flea treated with no excessive scratching or grooming going on. Is healthy in every other way. I don't groom her as she hates it, she is a short hair. I mentioned it to the vet when she went for her jabs last year, she didn't say much. Is it something I should be concerned about?

Everyone has dander. You can use hyper-allergenic pet wet wipes or a vacuum cleaner hose on your cat. Some cats hate vacuum cleaners.

I can't get a brush near her, never mind a vacuum. It doesn't bother me, I just don't want to be missing something health wise bless her.

What are you feeding her on.

Some foods especially cheap ones (worse if dry food) lack certain supplements needed to promote oil production that keeps hair and skin healthy,

Suggest you buy Canin Hair And Skin dry food, and mix this with moist food.

My wife has taken many strays with dandruff and restored them to glossy state.

She has a whiskas pouch morning and night and Iams for snacking through out the day (weighed). I also adopted her sister from the same litter and she's fine.

Actaully Iams can sometimes have a negative effect depending on cat's disposition. Hair and Skin is designed specifically for cats with such conditions. I am normally sceptical of such claims but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Worth a try?

It certainly is, I'll give it a go!

Dander needs brushing out of a coat it's worth persevering and teaching her brushing is good.

It won't happen overnight but after a couple of weeks, you should see some improvement.

Thanks all. I have to pin her down for brushing. Which is traumatic in itself, I might try and use bribery with Dreamies. They were rescue cats, we got them at 7 months old. I don't think they had much handling at the crucial time. They weren't mistreated, they love fuss, just not handling of any kind.

I'm a big fan of the Lintbells supplements. Currently using Yumega cat oil for one of my cats that was a bit dandruffy near his tailbase. After 3 weeks his coat condition had gone from scruffy to silky & glossy and no more dandruff

When my cat gets dandruff I feed him some oily mackerel. It may smell horrid, but it does wonders for his coat, clears up the dandruff and he loves it.
