Adele - Can her new album gain success?
Since the news that Adele is about to release an album very soon, could we see her matching the success of 21?The argument could be that she might not be as relevant as she was and the fact that music has definitely changed in terms of genre. Music that dominates charts is dance and electronic. However these days music sales have declined so could we see Adele reaching the sales targets of what 21 broke?

Can she have success? I don't see why not. Will she have as much success as she did with 21? I think it would be a stretch. 21 was an anomaly in terms of weeks at #1 and sales.

I doubt she will ever hit the sales she hit with 21. But i can't see her flopping as badly like Dido did with her third album or Duffy with her second album.

It will sell amazingly well and go number one everywhere. However it will never reach what 21 did

21 is, arguably, taking into account the huge decline in album sales since the 80s hay days, the biggest selling album of all time so it would be a massive stretch for any follow up to replicate such a rare occurence. Her new album will still sell big, though...

I think her new album could easily sell 10 million+ worldwide off the back of her success with 21 and the fact she's releasing in Q4 (her sales are going to be massive). Could see her doing 3-4 million in the US and 1.5-2 million in the UK alone by the end of the year.

This. It's not going to reach 21 levels but we really should expect it to. It could still very well be the top selling album of the year but I'm sure we'll get some silly threads on here calling it a flop.
It would be like expecting MJ to top Thriller with Bad or even Shania Twain to top Come On Over with her next record. |

Dance and electronic may dominate the singles charts, but not the album charts, You only have to look at Ed Sheeran.......his X album has sold 10 million worldwide, has never been out of the UK top ten for over a year. Adele's new album will do well, good music always sells,

I think the album will be a huge success but not on the same level as 21.

Well there's no way she'll match 21's sales. That album was a once in a generation thing, plus the market is so much more dire compared to 2011/2012.
I still think it'll do well though. It could do really well if she doesn't surprise release it and has a hit single before its release. |

It will need to have a hit single before it, however Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You are classics and whatever she releases first will be compared to them
Whatever happens though (if released this year) it will be the biggest selling album of 2015 and top 5 biggest sellers of 2016 and the single will go number one everywhere too |

I see no reason why not. She broke onto the scene with 19 and then became massive with the 21 album. She is one of those household names who can take a few years off and then return successfully.

There doesn't seem to be that many of those people about. |

The success of 21 was a once in a generation type thing so I can't see it being replicated. I do think her upcoming album will do very well if only because people have been waiting for so long to see what she'll do next.
I'm really excited to finally hear the album. I'm hoping she'll give us something new and fresh rather than a repeat of 19 or 21. |

there hasn't actually been any news she's about to release the new album, not accompanied by any quote or anything that might give the rumour substance. The same goes for reports about touring or not.
On the other point I'm not sure she's any more or any less relevant now than she was in 2010, her music wasn't what was considered 'current' then either. However it seems doubtful, sales have had another 4 years of downward trajectory since then, and i'm not convinced she'll be over keen on the idea of promoting the thing. |

Like others have posted, a new Adele is going to be considered a big deal - especially by the British media.
I will be very surprised if the album goes on to sell over 3 million copies within 18 months of its release. I think it'll sell 1 million copies within 6 months of release but after that I think it'll take much longer - 12 months even - just to get to 2 million sales. |

I don't think her new album will sell 30 million copies (I doubt any sane person is expecting it to), but I think it will sell ten million copies with a couple of hit singles and a decent size world tour behind it.

Oh no, I'm sure it will sink without a trace. Radio won't touch her.
Sam Smith basically released an Adele album last year, if "In The Lonely Hour" can sell well I'm positive Adele will still do well with her next album. |

Of course it will be a success, but if people are expecting it to sell anywhere near what 21 sold they are going to be disappointed.

The only examples I can think of in terms of artists who managed a just as successful follow are up are Madonna and Michael Jackson
Like A Virgin and True Blue both managed over 25 million copies. Michael Jackson would also achieve both 40 million copies sold for both Thriller and Bad. But then this was a long time ago when people actually had to get off their backsides and go to an actual shop and buy an album. Not illegally download it or cherry pick one or two songs from itunes. But it's two fine examples i can think of from the top of my head. |

It will do incredibly well off the back of 21's huge success, even if it's not very good. Everyone is waiting and anticipating it. The problem she will have will be with her fourth album. If her third album doesn't live up to all the hype, then she'll be in trouble with album four.
