Hi.

I have moved my BB from Sky to BT. For some reason it is not all happening on the same day. The phone happening today and BB on Thursday.

I was told that I wouldn't lose any BB for those few days however my wife rang me from home earlier saying all internet is down.

Is this because the phone line is in process of being moved over? Does the switch over happen straight away and if so will my BB stay with sky until Thursday?

Thanks in advance for any help given. I have tried BT chat but find that totally clueless!!

If you were on a Sky LLU product then BT will have to disconnect your line from the Sky kit in the exchange and re-connect it back to the BT kit. That will take a bit longer than simply changing one operator to another on the same BT kit.

It could also mean that as soon as your line is disconnected from Sky's kit you lose the broadband as well until BT wake up their broadband connection.

I know said might take a bit to activate the phone line but was assured that BB would continue via Sky till 3rd. I will be very annoyed if this isn't the case.

LLU or local loop unbundling is where your phone line (local loop in telecoms speak) is re-routed to a service provider's own kit in the exchange away from the BT Openreach network.

Therefore if you want to change service providers your line gets disconnected from your old provider's kit and either back to the Openreach network or another service provider's kit. So plenty of potential there for phone and broadband to stop working while the wires are re-routed.

If Sky were using the main Openreach network to provide your service then in theory switching should be pretty seamless as there is no moving of wires needed in the exchange.

I just presumed be up and running straight away but just tried ringing the house phone again and still nothing. I am hoping by end of tonight be activated and phone line working which would then make BB work as well?

Failing that if have to wait till 3rd then so be it, annoying but what you going to do. More annoyed if is case as BT said def wouldn't be without service when I checked with them.

There are three reasons why your phone isn't working when you ring it.

There is a fault on your line.
BT are in the process of physically re-wiring your line between the Sky kit and their kit in the exchange.
You didn't "port" your old Sky number over to BT so have a new phone number.

A fault would be a real bit of bad luck.

Moving the wiring around shouldn't take that long. But then again Sky could have shut your service off hours before BT actually get round to moving the wires.

If you didn't ask BT to take over your old number then they will be giving you a new number. If that is the case calling the Sky number is very likely to fail even though your phone line is fully active.

And even if your phone line returns to a working state for making calls it does not mean the broadband service will be working. In very crude terms the broadband and phone networks are separate systems in the exchange. Your phone line is, in effect, split into to two with one split going to the broadband network kit and the other to the phone network kit.

So there is plenty of scope for only the phone, only the broadband, neither or both to be connected up.

Last night when I got home I tried the phone line and BB and both were working despite not getting phone line email/text confirmation from BT. Few hours later this came but did say not to plug my home hub in till they tell me my broadband is ready. But I had already done this hours before and was working fine?!?!
