Why? He's a self-important twit. He went in there thinking his very sickly and borderline creepy brand of charm would win them over and they'd all band together under his leadership and sit with bated breath as he regaled them with 'modest' tales from the palace.
I have little respect for the man, so I couldn't care less whether they listen to him. I agree, he's definitely out of his depth, and it's all very awkward. However, Farrah's behaviour towards him was truly shocking and uncomfortable to watch. She treats everyone with contempt though, so I don't even know why I'm shocked.
Irrespective of my feelings for Paul it really is the mother of all management tasks. He has been dent in to manage a team who don't know how to do the job required, don't want to do it and think being asked to do it is an unjust punishment for something they didn't do. He has to produce an instant result with no time to get to know his team. He has no time to build any rapport or establish authority. It would challenge the best manager in the world.
I found it uncomfortable too, but morbidly fascinating He really is out of his depth, the Americans don't 'get' him and I can't see him getting any respect from them. I think he might have had some success if both teams were British, but then again............
