The storyline (and Connor) implies that there was a more serious/sordid matter involved - didn't Connor and the police mention his past along the lines of ...'well, with your past history what do you expect' (or similar)

No, I don't think you've missed anything. Lawrence was indeed only in prison, in the 60's for the 'crime' of homosexual activity. I think the only thing we learnt last night was that life in prison for a homosexual was very very unpleasant and bad things happened to him there. The copper was just being a dick basically.
