Radio commentators (non-football) thread for the 2015/16 season
What with it being the opening weekend of the Pro12 season, seems appropriate for me to open the 'new' thread.
With the Rugby World Cup happening in a few weeks, will that get it's own dedicated thread? |

I think with the cricket and speedway season's still going we should post those details in the 2014/2015 season thread and the rugby in this one.

BBC Radio Wales (Friday)
Newport-Gwent Dragons v Zebre (Guiness Pro12) - Catrin Heledd hosted with Gareth Rhys-Owen amd Ceri Sweeney doing commentary (All frequencies / Online) Ceri used the phrase 'double top' at one point in the first half to describe a cross field (towards the corner flag) which confused Gareth, since, obviously on a dart board the 20 is at the top. Ceri then tried to explain what he meant by that phrase, but Gareth was having none of it, although he did 'reserve the right' to use it in a future commentary

England v Fiji (Rugby World Cup Pool A)
BBC 5 Live - Mark Pougatch (host) with Alistair Eykyn, Matt Dawson and Andrew Merthens, with Paul Grayson pitchside BBC Radio Wales - Bethan Clement (updates) I've no idea if there was a second commentator, as I only listened for about 3 minutes! |

Wales v Uruguay (Rugby World Cup Pool A)
BBC Radio Wales - Rick O'Shea hosted with commentary from Gareth Charles and Martyn Williams. Bethan Clement was reporter/interviewer. For a bit Radio Wales had 'exclusive rights' (as Rick announced) for the use of Johnathan Davies before he headed off to do Radio Cymru stuff, as well as from Robert Jones before he went on 5LSX. BBC Radio Cymru - Rhodri Llewellyn hosted with commentary from Cennydd Davies, Emyr Lewis (now on twitter!) and Johnathan Davies. Again, Bethan Clement was reporter. BBC 5 Live Sports Xtra - Andrew Cotter and Robert Jones (John Southall for R5L) New Zealand v Argentina (Rugby World Cup Pool C) BBC 5 Live Sports Xtra - Gareth Lewis (0-40) Chris Jones (40-80 and host) and Andrew Merthens (commentary also on R5L from about 45 minutes onwards) BBC Bristol / Somerset Bristol v Nottingham (RFU Championship) - Johnathan Ford (studio host) Andy Champion and Gareth Maule (154MW / Bristol & Bath DAB / Online) As a big golfing fan (he mentioned being out at one of the Spanish resorts playing golf this time last week) Andy explained the Solheim Cup 'controversy' to Johnathan. |

Wales v Fiji (Rugby World Cup Pool A) (Thursday)
BBC Radio Wales - Rick O'Shea (host) Gareth Charles and Martyn Williams with Bethan Clement pitchside BBC Radio Cymru - Rhodri Llewellyn (host) Cennydd Davies, Johnathan Davies and Emyr Lewis Radio Wales also took 5 Live's commentary on Friday nights' New Zealand v Georgia ('cos it was at the Millennium stadium) and can only vaguely remember they had to get someone to fill in for a bit as Andrew Mehrtens was late getting there. Not sure of the name, but he was a Radio NZ journalist. England v Australia (Rugby World Cup Pool A) Radio Cymru - Cennydd Davies (also host) and Dr. Gwyn Jones (nationwide commentary) |

Just been listening to Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson on their Ameicarnage podcast where they said there would be news next week about NFL radio coverage. Having said they couldn't announce it until next week Nat did name 5 Live but gave no specifics. Be nice if the Sunday night show returned with those two at the helm now they no longer have a regular TV gig and there's no live matches on free to air tv.

Obviously this NFL season has come too soon for talkSPORT 2, but for the 2016/17 campaign I'd like to see them coming in to produce the same level of coverage Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and Absolute Radio 90s have provided in the past. If weekly NFL coverage is now no longer deemed viable for 5LSE, then talkSPORT 2 - which has outlined that it is open to broadcasting output produced by external companies, as this almost certainly would be - looks to me to be the most sensible option if the NFL still values getting weekly UK radio exposure. Were this to happen, I'm sure a condition of the deal would be that the Super Bowl is broadcast on the main talkSPORT station, which I'm sure they'd be happy to agree to. As for getting Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson involved on a weekly basis (regardless of whether it's BBC or talkSPORT coverage, as I know Nat has strong links to both broadcasters), I think an issue would be that the two of them are likely to be working for BBC TV on Super Bowl Sunday. As good as they'd be and have been on the radio side of things, it's always a big drawback to not be able to call upon people who'd otherwise be great all season long on your coverage's biggest night of the year. |

Monday 2nd November - Free Radio 80s
Tom Ross presented The Goalzone's Sports Bar alongside Dave Allen and Rod Harrington, with Ian Taylor at White Hart Lane PDC Grand Slam of Darts 2015 Draw - conducted by Tom Ross, overseen by PDC media officer Dave Allen The draw for the Wolverhampton Civil Hall-based Grand Slam of Darts event has been a fixture on the first Monday night Goalzone phone-in of November on Free Radio 80s (and Gold Midlands as-was) for many years now. While the programme took the same sort of set-up it usually does, Tom got to draw the balls out of the hat as Ian Taylor, who usually does this job, was doing his leg of the show from White Hart Lane before watching Aston Villa play at Tottenham Hotspur. And what with Villa having just appointed Remi Garde as new manager, the rest of the show was devoted to Ian and the callers' reactions to that appointment, so we didn't get to hear phone interviews with any of the darts players involved in the tournament as has normally happened in previous years. |

Thanks for alerting us to this Shaun. It wouldn't surprise me if Radio 5 Live have agreed to a similar deal to the one they had last season, namely getting commentary rights to the Super Bowl (which I think has already been announced albeit inauspiciously in the BBC's press release about getting NFL TV rights) and perhaps the AFC and NFC Championship Games.
Obviously this NFL season has come too soon for talkSPORT 2, but for the 2016/17 campaign I'd like to see them coming in to produce the same level of coverage Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and Absolute Radio 90s have provided in the past. Coverage will then continue on Sundays at 8pm, updating the early matches followed by a commentary. |

Thursday 26th November - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
5 Live NFL: Thanksgiving Tripleheader presented by Nat Coombs, Mike Carlson and Dan Louw from London, then Greg Brady from Toronto, Ontario American Football: NFL Week 12 (as Westwood One) Philadelphia Eagles @ Detroit Lions - Kevin Kugler and Mark Malone, with Ross Tucker on the sidelines (5.30pm GMT commentary) Carolina Panthers @ Dallas Cowboys - Tom McCarthy and James Lofton, with Scott Kaplan on the sidelines (9.30pm GMT commentary) Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers - Kevin Harlan and Tony Boselli, with Laura Okmin on the sidelines (1.30am GMT commentary) Great to hear 5 Live NFL back on 5LSE and a belated thanks to Shaun for his post detailing their coverage plans. Tonight, their broadcast began at 8pm following the First T20 International between Pakistan and England (which ended well ahead of 5 Live NFL's scheduled start time) with them joining the early Eagles @ Lions game in progress during the third quarter. Early on Nat and Mike were joined by their Americarnage podcast colleague - and former NFL on Absolute Radio 90s studio pundit - Dan Louw, although he'd left the studio by the end of their full coverage of Panthers @ Cowboys. I'm not sure when he made a move, although they had around an hour of time between the end of the first game and the start of the second one and I know he was present for all of that. Nat and Mike handed over to Greg Brady at 1am after the Panthers @ Cowboys game had finished, who is flying solo as the host of their Bears @ Packers coverage. I'm sure Shaun will agree that it's good to hear Westwood One's commentaries being carried on all three matches, I've always found their national radio coverage to be very strong. Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers will be 5LSE's full commentary this Sunday, with that game kicking off at 9.05pm our time. It'll be interesting to find out whether we'll be getting studio chat, closing stages commentary on a particular game or dipping in and out of multiple fixtures during the hour beforehand. For those interested in this type of thing, Nat mentioned that (at least the London studio leg of) 5 Live NFL was being produced by Shooting Shark Production. Said company is owned by Simon Crosse, the long-time producer of both Americarnage and 5LSE's previous run covering the NFL when it was produced by USP Content. |
