As for getting Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson involved on a weekly basis (regardless of whether it's BBC or talkSPORT coverage, as I know Nat has strong links to both broadcasters), I think an issue would be that the two of them are likely to be working for BBC TV on Super Bowl Sunday. As good as they'd be and have been on the radio side of things, it's always a big drawback to not be able to call upon people who'd otherwise be great all season long on your coverage's biggest night of the year.
Not sure what the BBC's TV plans for the Superbowl are yet but it seems strange that Nat hosted the International Series games but Mark Chapman is presenting the weekly highlights show. |

Sunday 29th November - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Will Gavin and Mark Hunter American Football: NFL Week 12 Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers - John Sadak and Mark Malone (9.05pm GMT commentary, as Westwood One) Nat and Mike's guests last night were Will Gavin, writer for Gridiron magazine and one of the hosts of the Tuesday Morning Football podcast, who hosted Absolute Radio 90s' NFL coverage in 2013/14 and reported from Super Bowl XLIX for talkSPORT this year, plus the Olympic gold medal winning rower and 49ers fan Mark Hunter. The coverage started at 7.30pm, with there being around 90 minutes of pregame discussion including contributions from UK-based NFL podcasters. While they didn't take commentary excerpts from any of the earlier games, Will frequently chipped in to round up the scores from the 6pm GMT kick-offs. Mark quietly left the studio soon after the start of the commentary, while Will stuck around until half-time as he finished off rounding up the scores from the early games that overlapped with the live commentary. The coverage's "executive producer" Simon Crosse joined Nat and Mike at half-time to discuss what next Sunday's live game will be - they eventually settled on the Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders fixture. David, just to let you know Darren Fletcher has confirmed that he and Rocky Boiman will be commentating on the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl 50 for Radio 5 Live in the New Year. Hopefully Nat and Mike will host commentary on the AFC Championship Game on 5LSE and then will shift to BBC TV to host Super Bowl coverage. |

BBC 5 Live - World Championship Boxing
Saturday 28th November - Wladimir Klitschko vs Tyson Fury Commentary from Mike Costello, Richie Woodhall and Steve Bunce. Really have to say as I always do after every big boxing commentary on 5Live Mike Costello is just the best ever radio commentator. I know it was mostly from colleagues but it was nice to see so many tweets praising his commentary on Saturday night and even an on-air mention from Mark Chapman last night. The three guys come together so well for the big fights. |

Sunday 6th December - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Paolo Bandini and Phil Spooner American Football: NFL Week 13 Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders - Dan Miller and Mark Malone (9.05pm GMT commentary, as Westwood One) Paolo Bandini, an Anglo-Italian sports journalist from The Guardian, was only with Nat and Mike for the 90 minute build-up from 7.30pm. Phil Spooner wasn't introduced at the start of the coverage, but was updating the early games kicking off around 6pm our time and so stuck around a little longer until those fixtures had finished. They're yet to announce next Sunday's live game - it's a choice between Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers. |

Sunday 13th December - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Will Gavin presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Simon Clancy and Ben Isaacs American Football: NFL Week 14 Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers - Kevin Lee and Mark Malone (9.25pm GMT commentary, as Westwood One) Ben Isaacs is the sports editor of Shortlist magazine, while Simon Clancy is a features writer for Gridiron magazine as well as being the deputy editor of 5 Live Sport. Isaacs was with them for the near-two hours of build-up from 7.30pm, while Clancy stuck around for the whole programme. Good to hear Will Gavin getting the chance to sit in for Nat Coombs in the presenters' chair (Nat was unwell, so I hope he's feeling better now). I thought Will did very well as the host of Absolute Radio 90s' NFL coverage two years ago and I've rated what I've heard of his work elsewhere, so it's nice to hear the BBC calling upon someone who is clearly well qualified but has made his name on commercial radio. Given the consistent reliance on strong independent production companies to look after it, I get the impression that Britain's radio coverage of the NFL would sound pretty much the same whichever broadcaster was doing it. |

Saturday 19th December - talkSPORT
Danny Kelly presented The Season Ticket alongside Jason Cundy (9-10pm) Boxing: WBO World Middleweight Championship Andy Lee v Billy Joe Saunders - Ronald McIntosh and Glenn McCrory (10.20pm commentary), with Gareth A Davies from The Daily Telegraph providing pre-fight and post-fight analysis and Warren Haughton reporting Unlike talkSPORT's previous nights of exclusive live boxing commentaries in the recent past (Haye v Chisora in 2012 and the card featuring Fury v Chisora II and Saunders v Eubank Jr last year), coverage of tonight's fight was incorporated into their regular Saturday night show The Season Ticket with presenter Danny Kelly hosting from the studio rather than the Manchester Arena. The first hour of the show was the usual football-based programme with Jason Cundy co-hosting before they headed to Manchester after the 10pm news bulletin. Without wishing to give too much away about the fight itself, talkSPORT were at the Manchester Arena for the boxing for about 90 minutes - roughly between 10pm and 11.30pm. Ronald and Glenn fronted the show and were on commentary duty, with the excellent fight journalist Gareth A Davies joining them before and after the fight to share his analysis. Warren Haughton was mentioned as being the station's "ringside reporter" (I suspect he may have been doubling up as their producer), although Ronald conducted the post-fight interviews. During the build-up, they also broadcast a pre-recorded interview Dom McGuinness did with Andy Lee in the week. It's worth mentioning that talkSPORT did not break off for commercials, trailers, news bulletins or other sports updates at any point while they were at the Manchester Arena. Once they'd wrapped up coverage just after 11.30pm, it was back to Danny Kelly who closed out his Season Ticket show with football-based items rather than boxing reaction - namely a back page review with comedian guest Darren Harriott and a tribute to Jimmy Hill from Bobby Gould to take them through to midnight. Must say I really enjoyed their commentary tonight, it was superb. |

Sunday 27th December - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Dan Louw and Simon Clancy American Football: NFL Week 16 Green Bay Packers @ Arizona Cardinals - John Sadak and Mark Malone (9.25pm commentary, as Westwood One) A second appearance of the season for both Dan Louw and Simon Clancy in the 5 Live NFL studio - both joined Nat and Mike for the near-two hours of build-up, but left it just ahead of the start of commentary, leaving Mike to update the other scores. Their half-time phone guest was Will Gavin, the other half of Absolute Radio 90s' NFL presenting team with Dan Louw a few years back. Mike Holt was leading the production staff and got plenty of on-air mentions! The past few days have been a busy old time for Nat Coombs. On Boxing Day he presented talkSPORT's post-Call Collymore show The Season Ticket between 7-10pm; he was back on talkSPORT the next day to host The Warm Up between 11am-1pm before switching stations to host 5 Live NFL from 7.30pm last night. One detail from last weekend's 5 Live NFL which I didn't mention (chiefly as I actually listened to the show on the iPlayer after posting that message) was that Gordon Sparks, BBC Radio Devon's popular Early Show presenter and Plymouth Argyle FC commentator who is also a Cleveland Browns supporter, was one of the NFL enthusiasts Nat, Mike and the team spoke to over the phone during the pre-game 90 minutes. |

Sunday 3rd January - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Charles Dagnall and Phil Spooner American Football: NFL Week 17 (as Westwood One) New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills - John Sadak and Ross Tucker (6pm commentary)* Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers - Kevin Lee and Mark Malone (9.25pm commentary) *5 Live NFL took brief snatches of the late stages of the Jets @ Bills game during their near two-hour build-up before their full live commentary on the main featured Buccaneers @ Panthers game. This week's studio guests were Charles Dagnall, the former Warwickshire and Leicestershire county cricketer who now commentates on that sport for BBC Radio Leicester and Test Match Special as well as blogs about the NFL, and producer Phil Spooner. Spooner left the studio just after kick off in the main game, having rounded up the bulk of the final scores from the 6pm fixtures, while Dagnall stuck around until the end of the half-time. Sky Sports NFL presenter Kevin Cadle, Vernon Kay and Osi Umenyiora were the telephone guests who popped up during the build-up to the main game, while their executive producer Simon Crosse made a few brief on-air appearances during the second half to discuss what next Sunday's live game would potentially be, which has subsequently been confirmed as the Green Bay Packers @ Washington Redskins. |

However, I'm pretty sure they took hourly updates from every session from the second round onwards - they certainly did from New Year's Day's quarter-finals on. *See post #34 for more detailed information about talkSPORT's coverage of the Andy Lee v Billy Joe Saunders world championship fight. |

Sunday 10th January - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson and Simon Clancy American Football: NFL Wild Card Playoffs (as Westwood One) Seattle Seahawks @ Minnesota Vikings - Kevin Kugler and James Lofton, with Hub Arkush on the sidelines (6pm commentary)* Green Bay Packers @ Washington Redskins - Ian Eagle and Boomer Esiason, with Tony Boselli on the sidelines (9.30pm commentary) *5 Live NFL, which began at its usual start time of 7.30pm, picked up commentary on literally the last kick of the third quarter of the earlier Seahawks @ Vikings game before carrying the whole of the fourth quarter. They are planning to do the same partial second half commentary on next Sunday's 6pm game from the Divisional Round. There was only one studio guest last night given that there was slightly less time for build-up with the extended commentary from the earlier game, but Simon Clancy stuck around with Nat and Mike for the duration of the programme. For the same reasons, they also had fewer over the phone guests, who included professional darts player and Steelers fan Paul Nicholson (who some may remember doing co-commentary for 5 Live when they covered a PDC World Championship Final a few years ago), Greg Brady speaking from Arizona ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, both prior to the main commentary game, and Fox News Radio's Washington-based reporter Rich Johnson at half-time in it. Here are Westwood One's US national radio commentary teams from Saturday's matches: American Football: NFL Wild Card Playoffs Kansas City Chiefs @ Houston Texans - John Sadak and Mark Malone, with Scott Kaplan on the sidelines (9.30pm commentary) Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals - Kevin Harlan and Dan Fouts, with Laura Okmin on the sidelines (1.15am GMT commentary) |

Sunday 17th January - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson, Will Gavin and Thom Gibbs American Football: NFL Divisional Playoffs (as Westwood One) Seattle Seahawks @ Carolina Panthers - Tom McCarthy and Tim Ryan, with Hub Arkush on the sidelines (6pm GMT commentary)* Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos - Kevin Harlan and Trent Green, with Steve Tasker on the sidelines (9.30pm GMT commentary) *This was pretty much the same drill as last week - 5 Live NFL began at its usual 7.30pm start time, having about 40 minutes of studio discussion before picking up commentary on the Seahawks @ Panthers game with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter. They stuck with that until its conclusion before doing full commentary on the later match. Joining Nat, Mike and Will in the studio was a 5 Live NFL debutant in The Daily Telegraph's deputy digital sports editor Thom Gibbs, who live blogs NFL matches for them. He joined them for the first couple of hours before leaving just prior to the Steelers @ Broncos commentary, while Will Gavin stuck around for the whole show. Their phone guests included Paolo Bandini from The Guardian prior to the Seahawks @ Panthers commentary, Rocky Boimain between the conclusion of that game and the start of Steelers @ Broncos and PDC darts professional and Steelers fan Paul Nicholson at half-time in the later game (they also spoke to a British Broncos fan to balance things out). Here are Westwood One's US national radio commentary teams from Saturday's matches: American Football: NFL Divisional Playoffs Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots - Dan Miller and Tony Boselli, with Ross Tucker on the sidelines (9.30pm GMT commentary) Green Bay Packers @ Arizona Cardinals - Kevin Kugler and James Lofton, with Mark Malone on the sidelines (1.15am GMT commentary) Next Sunday, Radio 5 Live Sports Extra will be broadcasting full commentary on both Conference Championship games. Coverage begins at 7.30pm as usual ahead of the AFC Championship Game kicking off at 8.05pm, with Nat and Mike hosting studio-based coverage along with at least one yet-to-be-specified guest. At the conclusion of that game (around 11.30pm I would think), it'll be off to on-site coverage of the NFC Championship Game, where Darren Fletcher and Rocky Boiman will be in the commentary box as they will be for Super Bowl 50 next month. |

RIP Jack I've posted this in a few other threads, but for those who haven't seen it already, talkSPORT paid a really fitting send-off to Jack over the weekend. During Saturday's edition of Matchday Live, they followed Andrew McKenna's well written obituary to him (which you can hear on their website) with the tribute Geoffrey Boycott gave to the Weekend Sports Breakfast earlier that morning before Adrian Durham and Jon Norman reflected on their memories of Jack. This was during the 1.15-1.30pm segment, which is worth catching on Listen Again. On Sunday night, they replayed the edition of My Sporting Life which Jack recorded with Danny Kelly last summer. I caught it when it first went out and thought it was one of the most enjoyable MSLs I've heard, Jack lived a varied and interesting life. |

Sunday 24th January - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra
Nat Coombs presented 5 Live NFL alongside Mike Carlson and Paolo Bandini American Football: AFC Championship Game New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos - Kevin Harlan, Dan Fouts and Boomer Esiason, with Mark Malone on the sidelines (8pm GMT commentary, as Westwood One) 5 Live NFL began on 5LSE at its usual start time of 7.30pm, with half an hour of build-up including Gridiron magazine editor Matthew Sherry speaking from Denver. Nat, Mike and Paolo were in the studio for the duration of the game, with Chelsea goalkeeper and Patriots fan Asmir Begovic being their half-time guest over the phone. I've only just caught up with their coverage of the earlier game, which wasn't uploaded onto the BBC iPlayer until Wednesday (hence the lateness of this post!), and as it was cut off right at the end of the commentary I'm not sure whether Nat and the team did a final sign-off before handing over to Darren Fletcher in Charlotte or if they just segued from the AFC Championship Game straight to 5 Live's coverage of the NFC Championship Game. I suspect the latter, particularly as the studio team didn't come in at any point from the two minute warning onwards. BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra Darren Fletcher presented 5 Live NFL from Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina American Football: NFC Championship Game Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina Panthers - Darren Fletcher, Rocky Boiman and Alistair Kirkwood (11.40pm GMT commentary), with Simon Crosse producing This game was simulcast across 5 Live and 5LSE, with coverage on the former station starting slightly earlier (after the 11.30pm news and sports bulletins) than on the latter as the earlier Patriots @ Broncos match overran. I'm not sure when 5LSE picked up coverage, there wasn't a handover nor did Darren welcome listeners from 5LSE to their coverage, although he did welcome listeners across the BBC Local Radio network just after midnight GMT. Radio 5 Live took news and sports updates at the end of every quarter, with Up All Night host Dotun Adebayo bookending the half-time bulletins with a couple of studio-based links. I'm not sure about this given that the iPlayer upload of their coverage is the 5 Live programme, but I imagine 5LSE will have also taken these news breaks. Alistair Kirkwood, the managing director of NFL UK, was with Darren and Rocky in the commentary box for the duration of the game, although was very much the third man of their team. For Super Bowl 50, Darren said that he and Rocky will be joined by Greg Brady and "some guests" in Santa Clara, although he didn't mention Alistair. Here's Westwood One's US national radio commentary teams from Sunday's later game: American Football: NFC Championship Game Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina Panthers - Kevin Kugler and James Lofton, with Tim Ryan on the sidelines (11.40pm GMT commentary) |
