However, they only covered the evening session of Monday's play, while there was no evening coverage on Wednesday (due to the talkSPORT Trophy football friendly) or Thursday (due to Super League commentary). The semi-finals were broadcast at 3pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, either side of live La Liga football coverage, while the final was a 4.15pm commentary on Sunday.

Leicestershire v Northamptonshire - Clive Edwards
Nottinghamshire v Warwickshire - Jim Proudfoot and Darren Gough (6.30pm commentary)

The IPL match concluded around 7.15pm, meaning talkSPORT 2 began their T20 Blast coverage at that point, picking up commentary from Trent Bridge in the 15th over of the first innings. Upon the conclusion of Nottinghamshire v Warwickshire, Ian Danter did solo commentary on the conclusion of Essex v Surrey.

Between 4-7pm, Darren Gough co-presented his leg of Drive Time from Trent Bridge over on talkSPORT, with Adrian Durham back in the studio.

With the IPL match starting at 3.30pm, the live Premiership rugby union coverage - with Exeter v Wasps from 3.15pm being an exclusive national radio commentary - meant that they could only carry the Gujarat Lions innings after 5pm. The cricket ended in time for them to carry the whole of the Super League match.

Sunday 22nd May

Ray Stubbs and Russell Hargreaves presented IPL Live

Cricket: Indian Premier League
Kolkata Knight Riders v Sunrisers Hyderabad - Nigel Bidmead and Alan Butcher (11.30am commentary)

Adrian Durham presented Super League Magic Weekend Live from St James' Park

Rugby League: Super League
St Helens v Huddersfield Giants - Mark Wilson and Garry Schofield (3.15pm commentary)

Wednesday 25th May

Andrew McKenna presented IPL Live

Cricket: Indian Premier League Eliminator
Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kolkata Knight Riders - Jon Norman and Don Topley (3.30pm commentary)

Coverage of this IPL match was joined in-progress due to coverage of Andy Murray's second round match at the French Open overrunning, with that match being a lengthy five-set affair. They joined the cricket at about 4.55pm, taking the last two overs of the Sunrisers' innings before the whole of the Knight Riders' reply.

talkSPORT 2 has commentary rights to the French Open tennis, with their coverage having begun on Monday 23rd May. The station is simulcasting the on-site official audio service Radio Roland Garros, whose commentary team includes Gigi Salmon, Chris Bowers, Simon Cambers, Peter Odgers, Matt Brown, Courtney Nguyen and Craig Gabriel. talkSPORT 2 are producing their own studio-based continuity, which so far has come from Will Gavin (Mon), Alex Dibble (Tue morning), Andrew McKenna (Tue and Wed afternoon) and Russell Hargreaves (Wed morning).

Sussex v Somerset - Andrew McKenna and Jarrod Kimber (6.30pm commentary)

*talkSPORT 2 was scheduled to provide commentary on Yorkshire v Leicestershire, but they actually featured near-full commentary on Warwickshire v Worcestershire (coverage started just after 7pm due to the conclusion of the IPL game, which was carried in full as the French Open tennis coverage didn't overrun). They were not able to cross to their reporter at Headingley Tim White until the break between innings, so I guess there must have been a problem with their line there. Brian Halford was with Ian Danter for the whole of Warwickshire's innings, but had to head off after about four overs of Worcestershire's reply due to his print journalism commitments, meaning Dants flew solo when commentating on the conclusion of the match.

**Commentary on the IPL Final was joined at around 4pm during the eighth over of the Sunrisers' innings. Prior to that, they had been carrying commentary on Andy Murray's latest French Open match against John Isner, with Andrew McKenna updating the cricket between games. But then there was an hour long rain delay at Roland Garros, which allowed them to concentrate on the cricket. The tennis resumed around 5pm, at which time it was the break between innings in the IPL Final, but talkSPORT 2 decided to stay with the cricket until its conclusion. This was the correct decision in my opinion, they've spent the best part of two months covering the IPL and it would have been very poor not to have carried the final, decisive innings of the tournament live and in full.

talkSPORT 2's coverage of the French Open tennis has continued this week, with commentary being simulcast from Radio Roland Garros and the team mentioned in post #153 plus the following presenters doing continuity: Russell Hargreaves (Thu, Fri, Sat morning, Tue afternoon), Dan Windle (Thurs and Wed afternoon), Andrew McKenna (Fri afternoon), Lisa O'Sullivan (Sat afternoon, Sunday), Tom Macleod (Tue and Wed morning). Macleod and Hargreaves would have hosted Monday's play in the morning and afternoon respectively had their been any play on that day.

For the men's singles final, Salmon and Brown commenated on the first set, Salmon and Nguyen called both the second and fourth set, while Brown and Nguyen did the third set. With the presenters, I've used AM and PM to denote those who hosted the morning and afternoon legs of their coverage - although while the presenting switch sometimes occurred around 1pm, that wasn't always the case.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats v Hull Kingston Rovers - Mark Wilson and Luke Robinson (8pm commentary), with Richard Shaw-Wright reporting

That is a bit misleading. A lot of the time 5 Live spends at Wimbledon won't be spent covering the tournament. I don't think Tony Livesey is there for in depth discussions about tennis.

I noticed Dave Fletcher, who has been commentating for Radio Leeds for a few years, is now covering Derbyshire cricket for BBC Radio Derby and BBC Radio Sheffield.

Yeah was appointed their cricket commentator, did cover the occasional Yorkshire match with Dave Callaghan.

BBC Live - Rugby Union - Saturday 11th June 2016

Australia vs England

Presented by Sonja McLaughlan with Paul Grayson and Matt Dawson.

Commentary by Ian Robertson, Chris Jones and Stirling Mortlock.

I heard a little bit of Radio Wales coverage of New Zealand vs Wales and was surprised to hear Ross Harries on commentary. I presume Gareth Charles was either doing Radio Cymru or S4C?

Perhaps Mr Difference or someone who knows BBC Wales better than me will know if this is his first rugby commentary? I've certain not known him do it before.

I'm genuinely not sure, although I've got a feeling that Ross has done a spot of rugby union commentary work before - I'm thinking maybe on one of the recent Autumn Internationals since Huw Llywelyn Davies' retirement, when the game has been covered across BBC TV, S4C, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru, when someone like Nick Webb (rather than Eddie Butler) was on English language TV and Gareth Charles was on Welsh language TV duty, I could imagine Ross being needed to commentate for Radio Wales. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've heard it said he's been used as a commentator in the past.

I won't tread on Ian C's toes by posting the full Radio Wales details (I don't have them for Radio Cymru), but Ross was commentating with Wayne Pivac, the Kiwi coach of the Scarlets. I'm guessing Wayne is probably back home during the close season, so is a shrewd and cost effective choice. I'd also venture to guess that Ross Harries is doubling up as Radio Wales' commentator and as a general purpose reporter on this tour for BBC Wales TV, radio and the BBC Sport website.

Thanks for your reply as ever Mr Difference. I presume Nick Webb (whom I believe would usually commentate on Welsh internationals for Radio Wales) was busy with cricket duties. I had presumed that Ross was there for reporting duties as you say with someone else commentating.

A thousand apologies. I only got up just as the game was finishing (at around 10.30am) so this is what I heard

BBC Radio Wales had Mark Poyser as a studio host, but whilst I didn't hear the game itself, I heard Wayne Pivac but no commentator, so switched to BBC Radio Cymru, where I then heard Nathan Brew talking about the late tries to Bethan Clement (both back in Cardiff) - I then put 2+2 together as I didn't see any of the 'normal commentators' tweeting about them on commentary, so just assumed they weren't in the "Land of the long black cloud".

Nathan then joined Mark Poyser when Radio Cymru went to join 'Ar y Marc' for their show in Bordeaux at 10.35am, so I continued to listen to Radio Cymru.

Onto today's effort:-

Chiefs v Wales BBC Radio Cymru had Gareth Charles (also host), Emyr Lewis and Ken Owens (nationwide commentary via Digital radio only)

There was no live rugby league last Thursday night due to it being a Challenge Cup matchround. I'm not sure if Jon Norman hosted Thursday's cricket from Lord's, I suspect he may have done so from the studio as Lisa O'Sullivan did on Friday night. It's noticeable that T20 Matchday Live on Fridays hasn't been carrying updates from T20 Blast matches other than the commentary games (although this week they did carry reports from Guy Swindells on that night's England v Sri Lanka ODI). I presume this is because talkSPORT's resources are stretched at moment with so many of their people out in France for Euro 2016.

It's a relatively quiet time for talkSPORT 2 at the moment, with the next live action coming when Super League returns on Thursday with Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC being the commentary game. It's back to the T20 Blast on Friday with Yorkshire v Lancashire commentary. Interestingly, they're planning commentary on Catalans Dragons v Wigan Warriors from Super League on Saturday at 5pm. I wonder if Mark Wilson and co will be on-site in Perpignan.

Or they could move some of the football commentators down there to have a go at rugby league commentary. Football commentators have already commentated on cricket.

I'll be tuned in on Thursday and Friday all being well.

talkSPORT 2

Thursday 30th June

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live from the John Smith's Stadium

Rugby League: Super League
Huddersfield Giants v Hull FC - Mark Wilson and Michael Shenton (8pm commentary)

Friday 1st July

Will Gavin presented T20 Matchday Live

Cricket: T20 Blast North Group
Yorkshire v Lancashire - Andrew McKenna and Alex Tudor (7.25pm commentary)

Saturday 2nd July

Mark Wilson presented Super League Live

Rugby League: Super League
Catalans Dragons v Wigan Warriors - Mark Wilson and Andrew Henderson (5pm commentary)

Sunday 3rd July

Russell Hargreaves presented Matchday Live 2

Rugby League: Super League
Leeds Rhinos v Widnes Vikings - Mark Wilson and Phil Caplan (3pm commentary)

So Super League was the focal point of talkSPORT 2's live output this weekend, with there being little in the way of limited overs county cricket (no such games on Saturday and the only T20 Blast game scheduled for today was abandoned without a ball being bowled). It was pretty obvious that Mark Wilson and Andrew Henderson commentated on Saturday's game from Perpignan off-tube - I'm guessing they were in talkSPORT's London studios, given that Henderson coaches the London Broncos and Wilson tweeted about being in London yesterday. Andrew McKenna spoke with the commentary team when hosting the edition of Matchday Live 2 which preceded their live coverage, but he wasn't involved in the coverage itself between 4-7pm. Unusually for a Sunday, today's game was broadcast under the Matchday Live 2 branding with Russell Hargreaves being the studio-based host.

According to the upcoming fixtures page on rugby-league.com, during the three matchrounds before Super League splits in two for the Super 8s stage, on top of the standalone Thursday fixtures they normally cover talkSPORT 2 will be broadcasting commentary on Castleford v Warrington at 3.30pm on Sunday 17th July and Warrington v Huddersfield at 2pm on Saturday 23rd July. It wouldn't surprise me if they also decide to cover one of the two games scheduled for the following day, the last before the split, should one prove crucial to Super 8 qualification.
