Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th July - @TheOpen Radio
Richard Kaufman presented live coverage of
The 145th Open Championship from Royal Troon Golf Club, Ayrshire
Commentators: Ron Jones, Matt Adams, Sue Thearle, Paul Eales, John E Morgan and Raymond Burns
Reporters: Alison Walker, Rob Nothman and Iain Carter (the latter two as BBC Radio 5 Live)
@TheOpen Radio was available on 87.9FM as a restricted service licence station in the local area of the course, as well as through live audio streams on The Open's website and mobile app and on TuneIn. They also provided daily podcasts through
The R&A's audioBoom page.
There was a few changes to the usual @TheOpen Radio team, with the core of last year's crew returning (barring the commentators brought in especially to cover the Monday's play in 2015) except for Richard Boxall and Gordon Brand Jr, with the former joining Sky Sports' TV commentary team. Long-time @TheOpen Radio voice Robert Lee was also working on Sky Sports' coverage. John E Morgan and Raymond Burns joined the team in their absence.
The commentary pairings for the latter stages of the final round saw Jones and Eales follow the leading group of Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson, with Adams and Morgan watching Bill Haas and Andrew Johnston and Thearle and Burns covering the other groups. Alison Walker was their roving reporter out on the course, with them taking most of their interviews from Radio 5 Live.
@TheOpen Radio took contributions from a number of guest analysts, most of whom I didn't catch a full namecheck for, but one I did recognise was Bob Bubka - who was primarily reporting on The Open for talkSPORT along with Rupert Bell and Russell Hargreaves. Along with their updates, Hargreaves anchored the Saturday and Sunday Scoreboard shows from Royal Troon, while Bell and Bubka hosted an Open Review between 8-10pm on Sunday.
I didn't catch as much of @TheOpen Radio this year as I normally do, but what I did hear was first-rate - expertly linked together by Richard Kaufman with the commentary continuing to be of a very high standard regardless of the changes to the line-up. With the live TV coverage moving from BBC TV to be exclusive to Sky Sports, they became my first port of call to follow the event. Given the earlier start times of their coverage and the lack of interruptions, I find it a much stronger service to that of Radio 5 Live. As I said this time last year, I'd like to see talkSPORT 2 carry @TheOpen Radio's commentary. That was not to be this year, but perhaps it could happen in 2017 when The Open won't be coming straight off the back of a major international football tournament.
